We conditioned The Mayan, our Chipotle Chocolate Stout in Islay Oak barrels for a year, and the result is a beast of a beer. Smokey, rich and complex, it is 8% and quite simply incredible. Only 700 bottles were hand-bottled, so act fast to get your hands on this limited special release.

Bottle from Latitude, Leeds. Black with no head. There’s dark roasted malts available in this ale, but its strength is overly dominant and not for the better.

330ml bottle. Cloudy darkest brown colour, no head; some long-lasting, beige bubbles. Predominant Islay aroma, peat, leather, shoe polish, TCP. Taste is dry, fusty smoky, peaty Islay notes again, leather, TCP, some wood, a sour-ish touch; some culminating chili pepper in the finish. The genuine beer can’t cope even rudimentary with its bolt-on flavours.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus and Joes. Hazy brownish color, small off-white head. Aroma is heavy heavy peat and tar. Taste malts, ash, tar, peat, lightly pepper. Medium body and carbonation. Too heavy for me.

Bottle at the Ale House, Chelmsford. Black beer with almost no head. Aroma of whisky, a little roasting and chocolate but mainly it’s the whisky which overpowers anything else. Some chilli to taste, but still the whisky excessively dominates what could have been a good chocolate stout. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Unbalanced. Very disappointing. Score saved by appearance and palate. 2/2 for me and this brewery following an earlier venture into the Cranberry Milk Stour...

Bottle shared at the Scopey 5K tasting. Thanks to Kenneth for this Ilkley rarity. Pours dark brown with a bubbly, tan head. Huge peat in the aroma, some earth, too. Medium sweet flavor with heavy smoked malts, some candied ham, just massive overall peat character. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate sweetness at the end, some dried berries, lingering peat. OK but you gotta like peat to enjoy this one.

15th February 2014
Scopey 5K Tasting in deepest Croydonia. Hazy dark brown beer, few pale tan bubbles for a head. Big TCP nose. Palate is light and crisp and dry. Mild fine carbonation. TCP smoke.dominates but is less sharp than the nose. Mild dark fruits underneath. Little bitterness. Smooth dry finish. Fruity tangy aftertaste. Not too bad after the shock of the nose.
