Sample at Brass Tap Polaris. The beer is a brownish-black color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily to a film. Short strings of lacing. Smokey aroma with malt and chocolate notes. Medium body with flavors of smoked malt, coffee and dark chocolate. The finish is smokey with a charred malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Keg at the Bottle Shop, Bermondsey, 06/09/14. Pitch black with moderately appointed dirty tan spotting and edgework. Nose is rich malt, dark fruits, brown bread, spice, subtle rauschings, ashtray tones. Taste comprises dark toffee, dark malt, biscuit notes, oatmeal vibes, light chocolate, less smoke than the nose. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok smoked offering.

8oz pour at Galaxy Hut pours a murky, deep brosn with some spitty, cream colored head. Nose has some cold smoke, cracker, wet bread crust, bits of vanilla, a little stale cola, some kielbasa. Flavor is sweet and smokey, malt, a little tree bark, bread crust, caramel, some lurking coffee, meaty, roast mushroom, a splash of BBQ sauce. Sweet, smokey, sticky finish.

Keg at the mad hatter brew tap. Pours dark brown, near black, no head. Aromas of smoke and liquorice. Taste is more of the same. Sweet finish. Not bad.

Keg at the Vintage. Smooth liquorice, dry and roasty, lingering dry finish, but not smoky enough!

Keg @ Baum, Rochdale. Black with an off-white head just around the glass rim. Has a fine roasted malt porter aroma that’s fused with hop, and a smoked character with a small sweetness also evident. It does fizz a lot in the palate which is its only downside. Its high strength is not so evident.
