The Grottenbier was created by one of the greatest Belgian brewers, Pierre Celis. The aim of Grottenbier is to see what the influence of a constant low temperature, such as in a cave, does to the evolution of a beer taste. In 2002, Pierre sold the beer (name and recipe) to Brouwerij St. Bernardus, where it has been commercialized for the last ten years. When De Kazematten became a possibility, St. Bernardus immediately saw a new home for the Grottenbier. The dream of Pierre became reality. The cooperation with the marl caves of Valkenburg and Kanne will continue in the future as well. In these marl caves you can experience what the low temperature do with the maturisation process of the Grotten Santé. Like the Grottenbier has matured there for the past 10 years, we will do the same with the Grotten Santé.

Old rating from 05-04-16 - A 330ml bottle brought back from my trip to Ieper last summer. Pours a dense brown colour with a beige head. Aromas of malt, caramel, wheat, dried fruits and banana. Taste is along the same line along with sweet malts & grass leading a medium bitter finish.

Аромат со специями, также ощущается карамель. Цвет глубокий темно коричневый, очень пышная пена. Вкус классический карамель, немного ванили, специй. В оттенке слегка алкоголь. В целом пиво очень мягкое и плавное.

Pleasant aroma of malts, brown kandij sugar, dark dried fruits and mild spices, hints of leather. Malty flavour with notes of brown kandij sugar, but not very sweet. Bottle (well out of date) from Cask Beer Oasis, Crewe. Bit of a weird one this. Pours a murky reddish brown – OK. But the head on what I poured was cream and fair-sized but transient. A few minutes later I noticed that what was left in the bottle had slowly generated an enormous head and was now coming out the top ! Anyway, the aroma has malts, molasses and nuts. In the mouth it is sweet and malty but with some lingering bitterness underneath. Flavours of dried fruits, redcurrants, malts and yeast. Finish is slightly dry, with hints of red wine. Decent enough.
