Black Rocker was brewed by BrewDog Aberdeen & Cromarty Brewing Co.
Through a melding of their demented minds (uniting like Voltron to form one super-being), our Aberdeen bar decided they wanted something super hoppy, super flavoursome, something dark and maybe something smokey. What they came up with was this: a smoked black rye ale, a dark twist on Cromarty’s Red Rocker.
Props to Chris for figuring out the nuts and bolts of this recipe, as well as to Craig’s mum for the homemade soup and bacon sandwiches at lunch time.

Keg at BrewDog Shoreditch, London during the collaboration project launch day. A nice collaboration here. Lots of smoke character, some meat, dry chocolate. Lingering cured meats, light minerals. Good balance. Very good.

Draft at BrewDog Camden on 19 October. Poured a dark ruby colour with a scummy white head and good lacing. Strong aroma of liquorice, smoked malt and pine. Initial flavours of coffee, grassy hops and cured meat. Finishes with burnt malts, hop resin and smoked woodchips. Nice on just about every level.

Keg at Brewdog, Edinburgh. Pours dark reddish brown with decent off-white head. Lots of fresh citrus an pine hops and roasted notes, not picking up much smoke. Taste has good roasted bitterness and light sweet, with a nice spiced note. Medium body and average carbonation. Long finish. Good.

Keg at Brewdog shoreditch. Dark caramel colour with red hues. Clear with a light tan halo. Aroma is spicy rye, pine hop and touch of smoke. Flavour is medicinal smokey phenol, pine hop and rye. Bit of vwg broth. Not sure this one works terribly well.

Keg at BrewDog Shoreditch. It pours deep brown with a small off-white. The nose is roasty, smooth smoke, fresh citrus, toffee and varnish. The taste is bitter-sweet, roasty, pine, toast, spice, mild smoke, caramel and varnish with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Really good balance.
