23rd October 2012
Opaque dark brown beer, tidy tan head. Light fresh palate. crispy and semi dry. Fresh and mild dark malt. Light and fruity hops. Trace of unsweet dark chocolate. Finishes smooth and light. Just a very light and easy going dark beer.

Bottle shared at CBC - Clerkenwell, London - this one I brought. Pours rich brown with a fine, tan cream head. The aroma is impressively mellow, with only some light, tangy dark malts and suggestions of spicy pine. Light to medium sweet flavor with burnt pine, burnt toast, faint plastic. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Bitter earth finish, more burnt toast, some licorice, more burnt sugars. Meh, pretty underwhelming. I have to wonder if my bottle wasn’t in top form (it wasn’t old, though) as this beer seems to be pretty well liked by most raters.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; still on a BIPA quest might be in double figures soon, pours dark black frothy off white head, strong malt aroma, taste is bitter coffee/chocolate, slight hop notes but not enough for the IPA strapline, I got slight 20pence with a hint of £2 pound coin.

Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. Dark brown pour with a beige head. Aromas of licorice, toffee, vanilla and caramel. Licorice, aniseed and chocolate flavour. Intriguing. Light bitter finish.

Cask-conditioned at the Cornubia, Bristol 28/07/2012. Near black with reddish undertones and a slight tan head. This was based on the winning brew in the 2012 home brewing competition organised by BBF. Aroma of pine, dark fruits and slightly roasty malts, with some grassy hops. Full, slightly oily mouth feel, with more fruit and a touch of caramel sweetness, followed by bitter chocolate and a lingering dry finish with a whiff of pine, Excellent.
