Bourbon Barrel-Aged Angel's Share

Admin Note: There are unique entries for Angel's Share aged in Brandy Barrels, Bourbon Barrels and Scotch Barrels.

Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Each time a barrel is filled, a measure of liquid seeps into the oak and is lost for good.

This striking Strong Ale is brewed with copious amounts of Caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied bourbon or brandy barrels. The beer spends a year in oak before it is packaged for release. The beer is 12.5% ABV and is available in 375ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

The Angel’s Share Story
It’s warehouse #5 built in 1886 that gets the most attention. The other four weren’t built so well and succumbed over the years. On the outside, to most #5 is a rather unremarkable white washed building. That is until they pass through the weathered doors and are easily consumed. Here in the hallowed halls it just oozes history. Inside this three story building, they find row after row of whiskey slumbering away the days until the distiller calls their name and they are called into action.

It’s a weathered building with a timeline of over one hundred and twenty years of continuous service. Looking around, there is a warm orange glow from all the wood inside. On both sides of the room for as far as your eyes can see, there are wood racks with carvings, nicks and dings. It smells sweet in here. Could that be the Whiskey breathing? Perhaps it’s the angels doing their work? Or is there just something sweet about 200 year old wood that intoxicates your sense of smell.

Imagine the history that belongs to the wood in this “shed.” It comes from seeds that were planted when the idea for the Revolutionary War was just fermenting. And it’s still here, every single day telling the story of this distillery. This warehouse has seen it all. It survived the harsh winter of 1913. There was the Tornado in 1956 and who can forget the flood of 1973? But, it’s still here. Still working, living and breathing whiskey as great grandpa designed it to do.

Sure, there are more cobwebs and spiders than there used to be. It’s an old building after all. One of the family members proclaimed it to be a grand old warehouse of monumental importance, so now it’s on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. Yet, the premise has always been the same. We need a place to age those spirits. And #5 has always been there.

Ask the family members to describe #5 and they all tell you the same thing.”The angels get more than their fair share from #5 but we don’t care. To us, there is nothing finer than the whiskey that comes from old #5. We wish they drank less. But then again, we really don’t need an excuse to drink more?”

Bottle. I have waited many moons to crack this, and now that coyotehunter has made his spring migration, the day has come. First, I would like to thank the folks at Lost Abbey for fixing a previous problem by sending this... class act, guys. Second, I would confirm the assessment that there is no carbonation, but it has absolutely no impact on my thoughts on this beer... I think carbonation would be a distraction given what unfolds. Pours a fairly dark brown with dense aromas of raisins, chocolate, toffee, and... as it warms... bourbon. I didn’t pick it up much right out of the bottle, but 5 minutes later and it hits you in the face. Flavor is heavy with sticky sweet brown sugar and raisin. Alcohol is big and leaves a nice warmth in the belly and across the palate in the aftertaste. World class stuff.

(Bottle, 2008 vintage, at Pikkulintu) Poured very deep and almost clear with very small and light brown head. Aroma contained malts, wood, alcohol and vineousness. Palate was full bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, vineousness, alcohol, mild vanilla, wood and low bitterness. Balanced. Aftertaste was malty and mildly bitter.

750ml bottle sampled at Sexual Chocolate Day 2010. Watery, opaque black, zero head. Aroma is mostly oak and vanilla and bourbon but that’s about it. Flavor is all booze, bourbon, sweet, brown sugar, molasses. Finish is hot and boozy. Too much, no finesse.

2009 bottle, pours dark almost blackish brown with a thin off white film of a head, but there is carbonation! Nice sweet vanilla, oak, and bourbon nose, with a sour twang. Flavor is sweet fig and dark burnt sugar with strong bourbon coming into play and a spicey hot whiskey, and grainy finish. Very interesting and I like it more than the brandy. Carbonation is light, but there, I don’t think it adds or subtracts from this beer.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a medium foamy head with little to no retention and no lacing. Aroma of bourbon with light vanilla and balanced sweet rich malt. Taste is a well balanced mix between some deep rich English style malt with light dry fruits and with great notes of bourbon and light vanilla. Body is fuller then average with very low carbonation but still enough to be enjoyable with no apparent alcohol which is surprising considering the clear notes of bourbon. Not bad thought not sure it is worth the price tag or should be ion the top 50 but glad I tried it anyway.

Bottle via trade with toncatcher. Deep murky sediment-laden red-brown body, thick, puffy tan head. Nose of prune, soy, and molasses, salty and leathery, with hints of oxidation. Dark fruits (especially raisin and prune) and oak feature prominently in the rich, creamy body, which also features notes of soy and dusty oxidation. Vinous. A complex, rich beer with a dense flavor profile. Although this was a fine beer, I prefer the brandy barrel version.

19th April 2008 Beautiful oaky smoothness with smooth bourbon that does nothing but compliment the beer. Semi-dry finish. Yum! 5th August 2008. On tap at GBBF. Superb! Woody but not dry. Whiskeyish bot not bitter. Fresh. Lovely!

The bottle looks really, really good. The beer in the glass is deep black, not very zippy, creamy head. Starts strong-malty, quite alcoholic, very complex with notes of chocolate and liquorice. Finish prickly-scratchy, still well balanced. Warming aftertaste. A great beer! Thanks to hapjydeuce for that bottle!

Sample on a one year aged bottle at JaBier’s refrigerator reduction tasting on 08/15/09, courtesy of Rogueone. The beer is a rich dark brown color with a medium thin and bubbly light beige head that disappears quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of burnt malt, caramel and subtle bourbon. Full, smooth body with flavors of oak, vanilla, malt and dark fruit. There is a boozy quality but it is not overpowering. The finish is oaky with a warming alcohol presence and a dark malty finish. Very good overall.

Dark brown with a nearly non-existent head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruits and bourbon. Alcohol and bourbon dominates a malty sweet flavour with a touch of oak.
