I got a case of this from the, at the time, beer manager of Julios Liquors, the incredibly friendly and generous Joe Santos. I've had the damned bottles fresh, extended aged (10/2/24) and every where in between. Honestly, could never find the sweet spot. The stuff was brutal when fresh - intense barrel, malt and alcohol. It never really evened out properly, in my opinion. Just kind of went from aggressively-flavored to older, but still aggressively-flavored. Or maybe the 2000 vintage, one of the best beers ever made, was just too difficult an act to follow. Whatever the case, not my favorite vintage.

Bottle at Kulminator, Antwerp. Cloudy orange, white head. Bunch of fruit on nose, fresh and dried, marzipan, grapes, raisins, dried peaches, some white wine, sweetish, bit tart, warming, nice bitter finish. Low carbonation. Quite complex and very interesting.

sample @ Kulminator Antwerpen. Last rated beer after a very long day of travelling and beer tasting. Probably needs a re-rate sooner or later, because me and my tastebuds were extremely tired. Aroma of oak and alcohol. Sweet flavor with a rich maltiness, alcohol, oak and a hint of rapsberry. More balanced and more complexity as the "normal" 2005 Stille Nacht. (4.1 = 8 3 9 4 17) Re-rate, bottle from Hopscotch, tasted @ home. Orange color, cloudy, slight gusher. Oak, rosebuds, hint of cherry in the aroma. Oaky, alcoholic flavor. Hint of cherry juice, vanilla, raspberry, malt. Upcoming sourness. Banana. Good complexity in this overwhelming beer.

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with lots of carbonation and light head. Aromas of dry brown sugar, musty wet wood, and soft old malts. Flavors of vinous old wood and old estery fruit. Still a bit sharp and warm but getting oxidized and old.

Bottle at Kulminator. Brilliant clear deep copper-amber color with white head. Aroma is slight oxidation, apples, almost funky, prunes, a touch walnuts. Taste is dry horseblanket, slight candy, prunes, surprisingly dry. Oily mouthfeel with fizzy-ish carbonation. Very good!

31.12.2017, 0,33l bottle @ home:
Nice fizzy shortlasting head, hazy. Aroma is dry sour-ish mineraly, old hay, old dusty cellar, sour grass, harsh yeast, old sawdust, moldy oak barrel, alcohol, mild vinegar. Taste is dry sour-ish mineraly, weeds, old dusty cellar, moldy oak barrel, minerals, sour grass, alcohol, medicine, metal tank, old hay, harsh yeast, berry skin. Medium bitterness, moldy and harsh sour-ish medical mouthfeel, fizzy soda like carbonation. Horrible bad bottle...
