Deep roasted malt from a clever blend of malts, hints of caramel, liquorice & raisin spice. A toasty dryness from pinhead oats with a subtle finish.

[Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading] Ruby-black with a moderate off-white head. Very slight, but growing carbonation. Tastes of coffee, liquorice, cough mixture and an odd hint of those foam banana sweets. The roasty malt behind fails to offset this strange combination. Rather sweet and sticky by the end. An odd beer that faied to charm me.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading, as Double Dark. Dull dark brown with a thin white lacing; aroma of roasted nuts and malts; flavour changes by the mouthful - first, sweet plums - then, well-roasted chocolate malts - then, smoke and licorice; dry finish. Very interesting. (29Oct2009 - 7/3/7/3/15=3.5)
Cask at the Tilly Shilling (JDW), Farnborough. Dark chestnut with a tight beige head; sweet aroma with some chocolate; smooth milky oatmeal body with some more chocolate; and a strong bitter finish with lingering oats. (19Jan2016 - 6/4/7/4/14=3.5)
