Something different, real ale base, brewed using a method derived from the traditional "Ginger beer plant" full mash, and using only real ginger, no extracts or artificial flavourings. Unfined, best served cloudy, in the style of a Weisen beer, with a little fresh lemon added when poured, not a run of the mill beer, drinkers fall into one of two camps, they either love this "off road" departure from the pure real ale style, or don’t, but life would be boring if everybody liked the same thing wouldn’t it? Cloudy, demorera brown colour, astringent ginger toys with very light hops on the taste buds, and fresh root ginger tickles the tonsils on departure.

March 2008. Light cloudy amber beer with clean cut ginger. Refreshing and drinkable.

Cask conditioned handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Cloudy orange gold colour with thin beige head. Soft ginger aroma, but in mouth, it’s a lot spicier, not really root ginger, very spicy ginger, not really very attractive. Shame as I like Freeminer beers. Bit of plastic on finish. It’s fine, but the thought of a 2nd pint would drive me from the pub, good thing the Tokyo Black was on too. As I say, fine, just not for me.

Cask at JDW ... Hazy orange brown ... light ginger nose ... Smooth sweet lots fo ginger ... little ginger bitterness ... but no real complexity... gassy but not fizzy.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Cloudy gold with a trace of white head; a slight hint of ginger on the nose; rather thin, tasing of ginger and sweet malts; some slight bitterness to finish with warmth and spice from the ginger. Unusual, but forgetable.

Bottle. Hazy orange colour with a strong, off-white head. Mild ginger aroma with some accompanying cinnamon. The ginger was more pronounced in the flavour, supported by some sweet mat, warming alcohol and a dry finish. My favourite ginger flavoured beer, although that’s not saying much.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pretty, deep orange - gets more and more hazy towards the end. No head and almost completely flat. Presumably sort of a ginger wheat beer. Distinct ginger bite and a marked bitterness. But quite refreshing. An odd bird indeed. 300601

Deep orange coloured. Big ginger smell, light bodied, somewhat acidic. In all a drinkable unusual beer.
