On tap. Pours a hazy orange/amber with moderate head. Aromas of earthy yeast and fruity eaters. Flavors follow same with additional dried apricot and creamy banana. Quiet sweet and creamy.

Three-grains tripel (where have I heard that before) by Jopen, basically an offspring of their classic Hoppenbier which has been in existence for over twenty years, though this one does not come far behind apparently so it's a bit strange I only stumbled upon it now... Bottle from a Mitra in Flevoland. Bit thinnish, egg-white, regular head, quickly dissipating in the middle to an array of speckles inside a steady, well-retaining moussy ring, over an initially near-clear, warm 'old gold' coloured beer with sunset orange-yellow glow. Aroma of fresh oven-baked cookies, 'appeljenever', candied apricot, chewing gum, honey, straw, pineapple, dried apple peel, sugared camomile tea, hints of old paper (onsetting oxidation - this bottle is a bit past its prime), moist white pepper, soap, melon, touch of old dried orange peel, vague dry earth which gets a bit more pronounced with sediment. Cleanish fruity onset, sweet with a very thin sourish edge, hinting at pear, dried peach, pineapple and light banana, rather softly carbonated for the style, slick and supple, very subtly soapy mouthfeel, feeling a bit light for a 9% ABV beer. Cereally, bit cookie-like and caramelly, bit honeyish middle, pretty straightforward but with a subtle wheat soapiness, yet falling short in oat 'velvetiness'; ends in a drier, softly but confidently bittering finish in which floral, somewhat rooty hop bitterness is reinforced by a certain 'jenever'-like alcohol wryness, which astringently lingers on the root of the tongue - underneath persisting dried peach- and banana-tinged fruitiness and lightly caramelly malt sweetness. Your classic sweet Belgian style tripel, obviously inspired by Tripel Karmeliet; lacking a bit in body, yeasty-malty breadiness and complexity, but the cookie-ish aspect of it does have a certain appeal. The bubblegum ester, though present, remains at bay in comparison with many 'common' Belgian examples of the style - and there are, I said it before, way too many of them in Belgium - but the alcohol does become a bit wry and fatiguing in the end and should have been better hidden even in this style. Other than that, a perfectly enjoyable tripel, but the style's home country (ironically the country where Jopen's beers were brewed in the company's early days) still has better examples, I'm afraid - and I'm absolutely not being chauvinistic here, as the Netherlands including Jopen have produced a remarkable array of great craft beers in the past fifteen-odd years. This one to me is not one of them, though admittedly the bottle is probably a little bit over the top and I should (and will) revisit this when I encounter it again in better / younger shape.

Flesje gedronken tijdens weekje Texel. Goudgeel, helder bier. Nasmaak is iets bitter. Het drinkt lekker licht weg, het alcohol percentage (ABV 9) is goed verborgen gehouden.
