Fun fact: The Guild 'Heren van Lier' decided to have Caves brewed again in 1976. Since then, it can be found in abundance in the Lier region, where it is a regional specialty. It therefore has the subtitle 'Het bier van Lier'. "In principle", Caves may only be served in Lier and in the own cafes of the Verhaeghe brewery. The Heren van Lier adhere to this rule and if an exception has to be made for whatever reason, a little Lier soil is scattered on the tap place (source: Wikipedia).

Bottle from Geers.
A: hazy amber, small, off-white head.
A: ripe passion fruit, cherry, blue cheese, malt vinegar, balsamico, wet wood.
T: sour passion fruit & cherry, balsamico, vinegar, wood, funky cheese.
F: tart cherry, vinegar, wood.
P: medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.
Not as full as Duchesse de Bourgogne, but very enjoyable and to be preferred over Rodenbach nowadays.

Bottle. Copper color. Vinous aroma. Malty with hints of cherry. Malty flavor with oak and hints of cherry juice. Slightly tart and vinous. Dry out effect. Hints of citrus and raisin. Very well balanced, albeit just a bit alcoholic.

Enjoyed this on the terrace of In 't Kruisken in Lier. Clear copper/red-brown colour. Off white head with a small layer retention. Aroma's: sweet & sour, balsamic, woody/oak, also a little musty retronasal. Flavour is quite sweet and moderate sour. Light medium bodied. I still like these Flemish sour browns...

25cl as Gummarus Feesten 2015. Pours amber, thin off-white head. Aroma is woody, a touch vinous, sweet. Taste has a fair sweetness to it, lightly sour, lightly balsamic with a soft acetic linger, not particularly sharp or woody, some caramel. Ok, but a bit sweet and not really grabbing me.

Sampled from bottle at deanso’s. Bottle courtesy of deanso. Clear pale amber with thin off white head. Sweet malts, apple vinegar, sugar, woodglue, dusty cardboard. My favorite aromas nudge nudge wink wink. Over mesium sour compensated by shitload of sugary sweetness. Medium body, sparse carbonation and plastic finish.

Bottle shared thanks to deanso. Clear amber with off white head. Green apple, apple vinegar, light acetone, lots of sugar, some stale cardboard. Medium sweet and sour. Medium bodied. Basically massive apple vinegar with sugar.

Gummarus Feesten 2015 edition, 25 cl bottle, drank at In St Gummarus, Lier. Pours dark amber, persistent tan head. Aroma is intense: mustard, honey, Modena balsamic vinegar, dark fruit, tobacco, chili pepper. Strange, complex and wild. Taste is dry, very dry. Thin, fizzy and sour. Long persistence with hints of leather and, again balsamic vinegar. Strange and rich.
