One of Van Steenberge's core beers, brewed for the Augustijnenpaters (Augustinians) of Ghent since 1978 and since 1982 in its current bottle-conditioned form. The mother beer of countless aliases.
The brewery describes it commercially as follows:
Augustijn wordt al sinds 1295 gebrouwen door de paters Augustijnen in hun klooster in Gent. In de middeleeuwen brouwden en commercialiseerden veel paters en monniken hun eigen bier. Water was dikwijls verontreinigd en dus was het veiliger om bier te drinken omdat het water wordt gekookt tijdens het brouwproces.
Toen de paters Augustijnen in 1978 op zoek gingen naar een nieuwe partner voor het brouwen van hun bier, was Jozef Van Steenberge volop aan het experimenteren met hoge gistingsbieren. Jozef won de uitgeschreven wedstrijd van de paters Augustijnen. De brouwerij kreeg zo toegang tot de receptuur van dit historisch kloosterbier, maar ook tot de kennis van receptuurbeheerder Janus Jeremanus. Janus was meer dan 25 jaar lang adviseur van Brouwerij Van Steenberge en introduceerde de originele giststammen van de Augustijnen die we tot op vandaag nog steeds gebruiken.

33cl Bottle from Van Alsem. Not a very exceptional blonde. Regular cloves, yeast, hop. Backlog from 2015/01/09.

330ml bottle. Slightly hazy orange colour with a huge frothy white head, good lacing. Aroma is malty, yeast and some spices. Flavour is fruity malts and spices, yeast, some bitterness in the finish and the alcohol is quite evident.

Flaske fra Waitrose, Finchley, delt med Steven: klar gylden med fint skum. Aroma og smak av mandarin, appelsinmarmelade og kandissukker. Varmende munn- og magefølelse, ganske slank for sin voltstyrke. Fint avstemt bitterhet holder sødmen på plass og gir mersmak.

Bottled@SBWF2015. Yellowish golden colour, mediumsized creamy white head. Aroma is wheat, citrus, some slight spiciness as well as some mild toffeeish notes. Flavour is quite similar, but also has some mild yeast to it. A bit thin palate, even though it’s got quite much alcohol to it.

Bottled. Hazy orange colour with mediumsized white head. Aroma is citric fruity and a bit yeast. Flavour is citrus, sweet malts, caramel and alcohol. Unbalanced and too sweet in my opinion. Some slight hints of spices also.

Draught. hazy orange colour, small white head. Caramel, malts, fruits, toffee and nuts in the aroma. Flavour is toffee, caramel, nuts and malts. Some hops and also sourness also. Lovely palate.

Flaska inköpt ombord Viking Line. Lätt citrusig doft med höigt och kryddigt inslag. Citrusfrisk inledning. Örter, check, lite pepprig, check. Fyllig och eldig munkänsla, check. Belgisk öl, jomenvisst.

Flaska från Saveur Bieré. Smak och doft av humle, jäst, korn, citrus, örter med toner av grön banan och vanilj. Stor sötma, bra balans, fruktig, fin beska.
