Straffe Hendrik Heritage is a special variety of the Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel, as it is a one year oak barrel aged beer. The beer is brewed in autumn and is only available in a limited edition.
The taste and fragrance of the beer are very complex and evolve through the years.
The tannin from the barrels blends exquisitely with the special malts in the beer.
The combination of the spiciness and bitterness of the quadrupel with the subtle taste of wine and wood from the barrels is inimitable. Licorice and dark fruits like raisins, prunes and figs can also be discovered.
With age the beer will develop a hint of porto as well.
EBC 100.

750ml (thx, Alex!) shared with Phill and the gang @ Matt's new place. Appearance: dark copper with a beige head. Aroma: a lot of wine barrels, dark fruits, some acidity. Taste: along the same line, very fruity, with tons of dark sweet wine notes. Not that Overall: couldn't really find a base beer over that much of barrel character, but it's pretty pleasant.

Poured from 750mL bottle (no 16133). Dark mahogany brown with minimal off white head. Dark dried fruits, lots of prunes, some vinous oak undernotes. Decent.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma has some perfumey oak character, strong wine (port?), Belgian yeast, and toasted bread. Flavour has plenty of spirit-/wine-like oxidation, some Belgian yeast, and some tart fruits. The barrels -- whatever they are -- dominate this, overriding the quad character. It's a nice strong vinous ale. Decent.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with light head. Aromas of new oak, cherry wood/pits, dark fruit (mostly raisins), and bready malts. Bright flavors follow same with emphasis on cherry wood and oak; almost tart. Very nice wood/barrel profile.

Optisch dunkles Kupfer, Schaum passt. In der Nase sauer, tartig, ebenso im Trunk, Trauben, Holzfass, Cognac, spät etwas boozy, passt.

This year's iteration of barrel aged Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel, dubbed Heritage - that is to say, brewed last year already (hence the 2022), but bottled and sold this year. Apparently, as has been the case before, a variety of barrels were used, but since presumably the combination always differs, I guess it deserves its own entry here like the previous ones. Bottle numbered 11720. Moussy, regularly shaped, greyish beige head opening under influence of the alcohol, clear deep chestnut brown robe with copper-red glow, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of hard caramel, ripe red raspberries, wet oak wood and vanillin, raisin bread, green pear, candied cherries, sweet apple slices, brown bread dough, venison, cloves, thyme, ripe nectarine, brandy, touch of freshly cut grass somewhere. Sweet onset, candi sugar mixed with dark fruitiness of red apple, pear, raisin and a hint of cherries, softishly carbonated with full, smooth mouthfeel; caramelly, slightly peanutty malt core with a dash of bubblegum round the edges, ending with a hint of mild toastiness and gentle tannic woodiness, the latter clearly pushing up its oaky vanilla aroma retronasally. Earthy hop bitterness blends with the toastiness but also the persisting main sweetness, in a warming alcohol glow reminiscent of red wine, calvados and even (vaguely) white port - but I have no idea which liquor was actually in the barrels used for this combination. Whatever the case, this is once again a beautiful aged quad in a series that so far has only astonished me and never disappoints. I really have to learn to buy more than one bottle of these for further cellaring...

Bottle sample at a tasting at Yoav's place. Brown. Candy, spices, floral, rosewater, yeast, sweetish, alcohol, a bit of bitterness. Really not my thing.

750ml bottle at tasting. Poured deep brown in color, thick off white head. Notes of aniseed, dried fruits in aroma. Oak and light sourness. hides abv so nicely. Scaringly drinkable. Really good, fairly complex.
