Imperial oak smoked wheat stout.

Like a sound system that fills the room with audibles swarming in every direction. This massive stout overtakes your senses with aromas & flavor of dark chocolate, caramel, roast, smoke, earth & wood, It's heavy I know, but you have to drop that bass every once in a while if you really wanna get down.

Label Design Notes: Surround's geometric pattern is based on a piece of tape used by an early analog computer that may have been used in multi-track music production during the 1960s. The type is set in Helvetica Neue LT Std so that we can maximize the area used for the pattern on the label without compromising legibility of the mandatory text.

Opaque black beer, thin brown head. Smells of malt, toffee, chocolate. Flavour is chocolate, toffee, earthy malt, some dried fruit and then you really get the woodiness from the barrel-aging. That ends up leaving an aftertaste that’s smoky and almost tangy. Rich and hearty on top of all that. Even taking the strength aside it’s not a guzzler, but it’s a damn fine beer.

Bottle, Legacy. Dark brown, thick, sweet, dark sugar aroma, with not a whole lot of smoke. The smoke comes across on the palate, there’s a lot of sticky malts, burnt sugars, touch of alcohol. Lovely. With age the smoke is obviously fading but that just allows the base to shine.

Original rate, presumably from the Stillwater event at Darbys. Very dark brown. Light brown. Touch of tartness and also has a bit of dark tartness. Smoky, dark chocolate, with a beautiful dark fruit sweetness. 3.8

On tap. Pours black with moderate tan head. Aromas of smokey roasted malts and sugary coffee. Flavors of maple syrup, smoked bacon and sweet dry chocolate, on a solid toasted malt base. Quite sweet but the subtle smokiness works well.

Thanks to wombat23, I think. Pours black from the bottle. The brown head is of short duration. Has a sort of impenetrable and inert look to it. Aroma is chocolate, old wood, ink, booze. This may be labelled a "smoked" beer, but I’m failing to catch the aroma. Taste is bitter with a mild sour note going into the finish. Noticeable chocolate. Finish is warming and very boozy. The brew is not quite successful in hiding the 10% ABV that it brings, which in my book is a flaw. Body is fairly heavy. Overall, kind of good in a harsh, punishing sort of way, but lacking nuance or any real reason to come back to this.

Shared 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Moderate to heavy lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, smoke notes. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, heavy oak, a bit of smoke, dark fruits. Finish is a bit harsh, the ABV is noticeable. Might be better classified in the Imp. Stout category rather than smoked. Still, a solid offering.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home after the holidays on a cold night. Appearance is pitch black, looks very thick, nice dark tan head. Aroma is rich in chocolate and smoked malt, lightly hoppy, smells boozy. Taste is very nice, rich, large smoked malt profile, heavy on the chocolate. Overall very good stuff.
