Chocolate Lobster was originally brewed to pair with a chocolate lobster bisque and white chocolate lobster salad slider. Sam happened to be at that dinner and got a real kick out of the beer, so we decided to brew a big batch for the pub so everyone else could try it.
This scaled-up batch has a robust porter base and was brewed with live lobsters, which were added directly to the boil to cook off for the kitchen. Along with the lobsters, just over 6 pounds of dark cocoa powder were added to the whirlpool, along with a basil tea that was added to compliment both the chocolate and lobster.

The result is a rich dark ale with notes of bittersweet chocolate and roast, with a slight herbal nuance and a subdued taste of the ocean in the finish. Just like the song goes -- "it wasn’t a rock, it was a Choc Lobster!"
Chocolate Lobster is now brewed every summer with lobsters shipped from our friends at Five Islands Lobster Co. in Georgetown, Maine.
Due to limited availability of our Brewpub Exclusives, Chocolate Lobster is not available in growlers.
Note: I’m made with real lobster. So if you have a shellfish allergy, don’t drink me! Your friend, Chocolate Lobster

Sampled on draft at Hou Thou this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy tan head that left good lacing. The aroma was dry, roasty and a bit woody. The flavor was bitter, dry and roasty with salt and almost old bay. Definitely a maritime presence and in an odd way. Long finish. Medium body. Strange.

On tap at World of Beer Sugarland. Pours black with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is roast and earth. Thin mouth, chocolate, roast, shellfish coming out in the finish, odd.

I totally expected this one to be really gross. Poured a totally opaque black-brown color with a wispy tan head. Aroma was some light tea, very light chocolate dust. Flavor is an immediate oyster stout character, light brine but not really salty. Some dark chocolate, steeped tea. This 10oz snifter is probably enough in one sitting, but I wonder how it would hold up if consumed alongside actual lobsters.

Around 12-14 oz on draft at Dogfish Head Alehouse Falls Church, served in a snifter. Dark brownish black with half a finger of light tan head. Aromas of chocolate, light roast, lobster shell and a bit of that briny spiced and salted water you get after steaming a lobster. Tastes of chocolate, light salt, subtle lobster flesh, roast, light soy. Maybe a hint of herbs but very subtle. Medium body with a dry finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Wasn’t sure what to expect but I dug it.

Keg at World of Beer Charlottesville. Black, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of brine, basil, chocolate. The taste is basil, chocolate, mild brine. Medium bodied, high carbonation.

GABF 2014. Those poor lobsters; what a waste. Heavily roasted malt and I actually taste shellfish if not so much lobster. The shellfish compliments the porter nicely, almost like an oyster stout. Some chocolate and some light spice.

Very random. Tastes just like you would imagine - fermented lobster tank water. Black with OK head and lacing. Smells like the sea a little but not necessarily like lobster. Light bitter finish. Tap at Rehoboth Beach brewpub.

Sample at GABF 2013. Pours near black with a small beige head. Aroma is exactly what it says on the tin.. Lobster, smell of the sea, seaweed, dark chocolate, roast and a vegetal note. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter, light to moderate salty. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
