For Cranachan, Tempest Brewing Company went back to their Scottish roots, taking their inspiration from the archetypal Scottish beer style, Wee Heavy. They also borrowed from the classic Scots dessert Cranachan - a gorgeous mix of toasted oats, fresh raspberry, honey, whisky and cream.

Bottle from beery Christmas. Pours a dark red with little head. Aroma is malty and sweet with loads of raspberries. Medium body. Flavour is malty and very rich, sweet. The raspberries again are very noticeable, giving this a nice touch. I like the raspberry touch, this is a nice and underrated wee heavy imo. Finishes warming and sweet. Really nice! Needs to substantially warm up though.

Bottle split at L6, thanks to Daniel, 17/01/19. Slight haze on a chestnut brown pour with a decent beige cap. Nose is berry fruits, toffee, light spice, oats. Taste comprises sweet malts, honey soaked oats, berry fruits, caramel, syrup. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok.

Bottle shared in London - thanks to Osprey. Pours clear honey-brown with a creamy, tan head. Somewhat fruity, bready malts, white grape, mild caramel. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. More ripe berries in the finish, bready malts, raisins. Interesting. OK.

On keg at the Hanging Bat. Appearance - dark brown and cloudy. Decent head. Nose - raspberry coming through, almost as strawberry. A touch of dank hazelnut. Taste - honey straight up. Some red fruit in there too. Mainly brown malt and honey though. Palate - medium bodied and creamy. Dry crunchy finish. Overall - good but a bit confusing.

On keg at the Hanging Bat. Appearance - deep brown a most black. Nice off white head. Nose - raspberries dominate the expected nuts and oatmeal. Taste - again big raspberry note. Light toffee trying to poke its head in. Palate - creamy and medium bodied. Tangy middle and end. Overall - if I closed my eyes this could be a blonde beer. The raspberry dominates brilliantly but the other side of that is that the malt doesn't show up. This is a fruit beer - and the fruit is generous - and it's definitely not a Wee Heavy.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours an opaque dark brown with a small, creamy beige head. Really odd aroma, kinda sweet buttery - doesn't really seem like raspberries, but more like some gimmy candy. Medium body, vague roast and peak, and then this slightly rotten berry note and again buttery, but not in a diacetyl kinda way. A very odd beer - I kinda wished I like it more than I do! 071218
