Hoss is based on the Märzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with some hints of cherry and dark notes, dominate while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

12 oz bottle, $1.90 single at Famous Liquors. "Bottled on 06/25/10." Pours a light brown color under a thick head. Sweet caramel malt smell with a touch of rye spice. May be a bit old, but taste is still decent. A bit of phenol kind of thickens the malts. Sweet and caramel malt, with an extra touch of spice from rye. Notes of plum and basil.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 5/2/11
Aroma: The aroma is fairly malty, some caramel, rye bread, a touch of hops, and some spice
Appearance: This one pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head
Flavor: The taste is light-medium sweet with a light hoppy presence for some balance
Palate: The body is fairly light with an interesting mouthfeel and some smoothness/stickiness to it
Overall Impression: A decnet marzen with a mostly caramel flavor that also has a touch of rye and hops to it. Nothing overly exciting, but decent enough none-the-less. I’d drink it again, but I wouldn’t really rush out for it.

Cloudy amber and copper coloured body with a dense (two centimetres tall) tan head. Aroma of STRONG rye, malt, earth, metal and more rye. Medium-bodied; Assertive malt flavour with a touch of earth, a lot of nuts, some light sweetness and a bit of caramel and rye to finish. Aftertaste is very dry and showing a lot of rye and metallic plus nutty tastes. Overall, a pungent and strong beer that shows a lot of rye characteristics tucked in with some dry and earthy notes as well. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 13-February-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 27-February-2011.

12 oz. bottle at Mason’s Pub. Pours a dark orange with a small tan head. The aroma is burnt toast, brown sugar, pumpkin, and cinnamon. The flavor is yeasty and sweet. The mouthfeel is thick and sticky, with a mellow bitter finish. I’m not typically a fan of this style, but this is one of the better Marzens I’ve tried.
