Hoss is based on the Märzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with some hints of cherry and dark notes, dominate while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

Clear amber beer, little white head. Softish palate. Lots of lagerish malt, a little rye spice, a whisper of orange. Finishes soft. Doesn’t really hang together, a bit too malty.

Total Wine, Fairfax 355ml ($2): Pours an amber colour with a small head. Aroma is of caramel malt, spice, and rye. Taste is like a good marzen: malty and not too sweet, but with a few extra elements that provide this beer with serious uniqueness. Body is perfect; beer is sessionable; alcohol is well-covered.

Tap. Pours clear amber, small off-white head, dissipates fast, minimun lacing. Aroma is grain, roasted malt, caramel, and yes, I am going to say it - asparagus. Taste is quite nice, malty, a bit spicy from the rye later, mild bitter finish.

Not a bad bottle, but in dire need of more bubbles. The flaccid texture leaves the sweeter notes of the beer hanging on the tongue, while the rye never takes hold. The grainy middle and moderately dry finish are nice touches, but the rye needs to be more prevalent, and there damn sure needs to be more carbonation.

Dark amber with a thick head. Bland aroma. The taste is subtle rye and mellow munich malts with light toastiness. OK.

Pours a nice copper-amber with little to no head. The flavor is a nice roasted malt/rye. Not bad, not great.

12 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazed lightish amber. Pale malt aroma, overripe fruit, caramel. Flavor is some caramel, pale malts, a little red apple. Just not much of interest.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of grain, hay, and rye - like an oktoberfest. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and newly harvested hay, leading to a dry and bitter finish.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 09/02/2011. Pours a rich amber-brown color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malt and spicy hops. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, grain and hops. Some spice in the background. The finish is toasty tye bread and malt. Decent beer overall.
