Vancouver Island grown hops and Island grown and malted barley are at the epicentre of this medium bodied ale, which boasts high hop bitterness and an aftershock of intense flavour. The Big One is crafted in a classic British style but features 100% whole-flower, Island grown hops. The result is a dry but intense and unique Vancouver Island beer.

473ml can. Pours a hazy gold amber with a large, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves thick patches of lace. Aroma of caramel malt, orange rind, earthy yeast and herbal hops. Sweet flavour of toasted caramel malt, orange rind, black tea and pine resin in a dry, bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average to soft carbonation. Needs more work.

Nice foam, good foam, the kind of foam that's probably the best foam. But the Mexicans should pay for it! A soft orange-copper body though, good yeast funk with solid hints of orange rind and peach zest; the flava flave is heavy on the big oily hops, apricot and mandarin orange. Oily on the mouth. Could use more flavour. But otherwise a good effort, nice drinking, casual and could use more refinement.

Can - Sweet caramel, orange and a touch of spice. Clear gold with a nice white head. Orange and caramel with a dry bitter finish. Decent, but nothing special.

On tap. Pours a dark amber with moderate head. Aromas of malt extract and light toffee. Flavors of sweet malts, caramel, and acidic bitter hops. Okay but nothing special.

Vibrant amber with just a slight haze, but a rocky head. On the nose, it's got a nice spicy hop character with a bit of toasty malt, the two complementing each other well. Maybe a touch of yeast fruitiness in there as well. It's got a lot going on, actually. There's this tobaccoey note on the palate, lots of bitterness, that same juicy malt sweetness and subtle yeasty note. Imagine a brewer in 2021 paying attention to yeast and malt. It's not perfect, but it's a nice change of pace.

Can, from Brewery Creek, Vancouver
Beautiful color, golden to light amber, hazy, with medium sized head. Aroma of malt and toffee, with biscuity herbal notes, green tea, some mountain herb (mild feeling); chamomile and hay. Dry mouthfeel; strong hay and toffee flavor, even stronger bitterness; the hops provide a lot of hop oils, light chicory, no real fruity character.
Fresh, very drinkable, although missing a fruitier character.

568ml Can, thanks H&T. Hazy orange/amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of bitter yeast, plastic, citrus, quite some hops. Flavour is light-sweet, light-malty, yeast, firm bitterness bordering on plastic-like, citrus, floral, firm bitter finish with some grass. Light-bodied. Decent IPA.

568mL can, pours a hazy golden with a medium white head. Aroma is bland, with notes of pine and resin, a bit of soapy floral notes. Flavour brings out soapy, detergent-like notes, along with pine and biscuity malt. Drinkable and thirst-quenching, but not the most refined or interesting IPA. Solid.
