Bottle at FatPhil's, Tallinn. Vintage 2009 probably. Color is murky orange with very small white head. Aromas and flavors: Ripe fruits, some dry fruits, some sweetness and malts. Well.. it is old.

On tap at the brewery taproom. Pours opaque ruby brown with a slim white head. Aroma: sweet malts, raisins, plums, hint of banana esters. Taste: moderate to heavy sweet & light bitter, cane sugar, candi sugar, dark fruits, dried fruits, caramel, molasses, light spices. Medium body, light carb, warming boozy finish

12oz can from slice and biscuit. Normal enough pour, dark amber, light mahogany hue, small ring of bubbly head. Smell is also right on, raisins, plums, a bit of Belgian yeast. Taste is definitely spot-on, right in the zone. Overall feel is just a little bit lacking. Still up pretty high quality quad but just shy of a superior quad

Mighty unsure of a quad that comes from a 12 oz can. But here it is in my hand so let's give it a shot. This beer was picked up in Santa Fe in the early fall. Pop the tab and in it goes to my tulip glass. I see a black-gold liquid, curious, finished by a strong eggshell white head. The scent, decent, fills the room, yellow fruit, grain, ribbon candy. Again not exactly quadrupel standard. But all this is the lead up to the taste. I would call it more a Belgian ale inclination. There is some red plum, malt, a touch of cane sugar sweetness, red cherry. The 10% abv is completely covered. Not bad, not great. a departure from the expected at best.

This one pours from foil wrapped 22oz bottle a clear copper colour witha large head of foam that shrank quickly leaving a fine broken layer with some lacing.

The smell is of yeast and fruit, mainly dark fruit. Quite nice.

The taste is mainly fruit up front. I can taste some fig, apricot, plum, followed by a strong yeast flavour , some candy sugar, and some bread. More sips in and the alcohol becomes more noticeable with some graininess coming through as well.To be honest, I can't say the flavours are working very well together and I'm finding it difficult to take more sips. This brew just doesn't work for me, I reckon.

Bottom line: This is my first bottle of The Reverend and I'd daresay, it will be my last. The flavours were just too chaotic for my palate.

Bottle. Light clear amber light toasted malt some Belgian yeast notes. LingerING abv burn

One of Avery’s many strong ales, from a can at BeerTemple in Amsterdam. Thick, moussy, egg-white head with slowly opening middle, hazy orangey bronze robe - looking more ’quadrupel’ (as in La Trappe Quadrupel) than ’abt’ (as in Sint-Bernardus 10 Abt). Powerful, enticing bouquet of caramel sauce, marmelade, freshly baked bread, chestnut cream sauce, brandy, grilled horse steak juice, cashew nuts, strawberry wine, hazelnut oil, white port, cane sugar, candied cherry and a faint hint of cooked vegetables in warming up. Candied sweet onset, cherry, almond and marmelade notes, soft with a kind of juicy-meaty umami note, lots of residual candi sugary sweetness as is to be expected from the style, soft carbo, thick, bit fluffy and pleasantly vinous mouthfeel. Big caramelly and nutty malt body, sweetness enhanced by lingering candy sugar, yet nowhere cloying; sweetness also dominates the finish but in a noble, refined way, with hints of chestnut cream sauce, orange zest and amaretto, low in bitterness but still a - welcome - drying, mildly spicy hop character; some retronasal cooked cauliflower notes, probably DMS, but fortunately very limitedly so. Afterglow of gently warming alcohol. Quadrupel in the most classic sense indeed - ’classic’ referring to La Trappe Quadrupel, which has, after all, only been in existence since 1991.

Nice slightly bubbly-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet mineraly, caramel malts, minerals, grass, grain, hay, cereal, toast, raisins, fruit stones, worth. Taste is slightly sweet grassy, raisins, grass, minerals, hay, fruit stones, weeds, paper, caramel malts, sap, grain. Medium bitterness, slightly watery and harsh mineraly mouthfeel. Boring.
