The Session Beer Reimagined

Once called the “forbidden rice” as it was reserved only for Chinese royalty, black rice has a powerful anthocyanin antioxidant properties, a luxurious black color and wonderful nutty flavor. We brewed this nut brown ale with American two-row pale malt, a good helping of black rice, and a touch of chocolate malt. The result is a lightly hoppy, dark mahogany ale with undertones of roasted malt, dark rye bread with a delicious nutty flavor. Weighing in at an easy going 3.8% ABV, this beer is infinitely quaffable and ready to be enjoyed by everyone.

Review based on the BJCP2021 guidelines (style 31A: black rice / 19C). Can 34 cl (batch undeclared - BB undeclared). AROMA: medium-low rice-lke aroma followed by medium-low malty aroma with slight toffee character. APPEARANCE: dark amber color and clear with slight ruby highlights. medium-low beige head with good retention. TASTE: similar to the aroma with medium-low malt notes (toasty, rye bread, slight toffee). medium bitterness with a dry finish. MOUTHFEEL: medium-low body with medium-low carbonation. OVERALL: an ok session american brown ale with interesting notes.

Can 12fl.oz. @home poured into a tumbler. Clear deep ruby brown colour, fair moussy off-white to beige head, dissipating slowly, fair lacing. Aroma roasted malts, caramel, coffee, cola, earthy notes. Thin taste, medium sweet and light bitter, malty, coffee groundings, cocoa powder. Light body, watery texture, soft carbonation, thin sweetbitter aftertaste, cocoa powder, earthy notes, mediocre.

In der Nase Malzbier, im Trunk recht flach, malzig, man merkt eben die wenigen Prozente. Hinten recht wässrig.

Cardboard and grain aroma. Cola brown, medium off-white head. Grainy. Light to medium body, easy carbonation. Not much going on. I'd call it a schwarzbier.

12 oz. can purchased at Rally in St Pete, FL. Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a thick khaki head and great retention. Good lacing. Very faint nutty aroma. Clean, nutty brown ale flavor. Lightly crisp yet also creamy mouthfeel. Surprisingly good flavor and body for only 3.8% ABV. A lite brown ale. Simple profile and it works.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours very dark and ruddy, but clear, with a tan head. Aroma is hard to pin down. Making me think of rye. Med body. Flavor is bready, somewhat toasty, malt. Dry. Hints of chocolate. Rye is still on my mind. I think it would go great with a pastrami on rye. Not very bitter. Tasty tho.
