Honoring the eclectic East Side of the city, this Bavarian dark lager is a blend of three specialty grains, creating a rich, smooth, dark beer that anyone can enjoy. Pours a clear, dark color with an off-white head. Hints of roasted malts find their way into the aroma, and form a pleasant background to the dark, rich flavor. The German lager yeast rounds out this brew with a smooth, complex finish. Winner of the 2014 and 2016 European Beer Star Gold Medal for Bohemian-Style Schwarzbier.

Whole Foods, Bowery 12oz ($2): Pours a dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and that distinct lager aroma. Taste is very mellow, with pretty much no bitterness. It is very easy to session. It ain’t very complex, but it is plenty pleasant to drink.

Bottle @ home. Brown appearance with a light brown head. Richly nutty, light espresso, toasty caramel malty, earthy, big nutty aroma. Somewhat earthy, big nutty, toasty malty, rich chocolate flavor. One of the best American dunkels I’ve had. These guys can make some nice german beers. Nice beer!

12 oz bottle purchased at Off the Vine in Leawood, Kansas. Nov wk 2 notched on the label. Pour is brown garnet, mostly clear with a one inch light tan head. Aroma of gently charred wood, roast, and mildly sweet malt. Taste is mild milky sweet malt, light roast and a clove yeastiness. Palate is medium to thin, high level carbonation and a char roast dry finish. Nice sessionable beer.

Bottle. Pours with a large tan head and a hazed brown body. Aroma of fruit, leather, slight koji of all things, caramel, chocolate. Flavor is fruity, caramel, leather, light umami and chocolate. Quite fizzy. One of the better Lakefront beers I have gotten from this 8 pack sampler.

Bottle. Poured deep red brown with lasting tan head. Much lacing. Sweet malt aroma with a bit of hay. Medium malt flavour, not as full and rich as the puff, but pleasant. Medium finish. A drinkable dunkel.

Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma offers some roasted malts and a little chocolate. Flavor is a slight roasted malt with a sour finish. Nothing i would have to try again.

Bottle from sampler from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a deep reddish brown with minimal head but decent retention. Aroma is sweet and roasty. Chewy texture. Taste of coffee, brown sugar, dark fruits. I like this.
