Honoring the eclectic East Side of the city, this Bavarian dark lager is a blend of three specialty grains, creating a rich, smooth, dark beer that anyone can enjoy. Pours a clear, dark color with an off-white head. Hints of roasted malts find their way into the aroma, and form a pleasant background to the dark, rich flavor. The German lager yeast rounds out this brew with a smooth, complex finish. Winner of the 2014 and 2016 European Beer Star Gold Medal for Bohemian-Style Schwarzbier.

Nice aroma of dark malt with hop. A mahogany color with a white head that quickly left. Medium body with creamy/fizzy carbonation. Flavor is slightly sour, with strongly roasted malt and some coffee. Something of a noble/hallertau hop presence. The finish is sweet malt, and the bitter is not fully balancing that. Still it is quite nice, and not that far off a porter in its way.

12 oz bottle from Lakefront Sampler from Bottle Barn! Nose smelled good as soon as I opened it, rich caramel and roasty coffee along with some graininess; clear dark amber with a medium straw head; flavor has caramel, very light hop bitterness, and lightly sweet caramel. Decent Dunkel!

Yes this stuff is quite dark. Dark for a dark lager but now I see it is in the dunkel style category. Has a reddish tinge on the corners of the glass. Aroma of good dark beer, perhaps some roastiness in there. Slight creamy head. Very good dark beer flavors, somewhat like a mild porter but more than a dark lager. Rather friendly and easy to enjoy for a lager lover. Decent carbonation. Very little bitterness can be detected thru the session. Some charred flavors without the bitter bite. Well mannered with a slight bitter linger, but i can easily live with it. Enjoyable, would purchase again.

Bottle. Pour is a dark brown with a one finger high tan head. Aromas are of roasted malt, but not really a roasted barley smelll... almost like oats or wheat that has been burnt slightly. Also comes across as slightly earthy. Flavor is much more in line with roasted barley... a coffee-like burnt taste that is sweetened by a chocolate undercurrent. There is a mildly distracting backnote that is both creamy and sour (like citrus sour?) This sort of builds in the aftertaste and seems to pull against the direction that the beer first seems to want to head. Not bad, but could be much better with a few minor adjustments.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a ruby-chestnut color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma was moderate dark malts. The flavor was mildly roasty and malty with a hint of floral hops.

12 oz. bottle, "Bottled during Feb." Nice dunkel smell in my tumbler, a bit of phenol perhaps, no yeasties. Darker ruby color than most stuff passing itself off as "dark beer." Column of bubbles supporting a thin creamy head. Taste has some toffee and caramel grains to it. Now, I let this sit for 15 minutes while doing other computer stuff, and found this somehow settled to a lightly carbonated, almost cask type texture. Not quite the coffee roast they claim, but still pretty smooth and enjoyable. Then again, this may be an older bottle.

Translucent toast-colored body, thin off-white head. Toasty aroma with caramel and brown sugar. Cerealy sweet body with toasty notes and light hops bitterness. A pretty good sip.

[draught] Easy drinking, but lacking any stand-out characteristics. The body is pretty thin, and the aroma fails to grabs attention and make you want to drink the beer at all. Slight coffee flavor at least keeps the tongue from being completely bored, otherwise this is a waste of calories.
