Lucky Bucket’s Original American IPA begins with a nice malt bill that lets the brew stand up to the mountain of hops added later. After the boil, the hot wort (the beer before it’s really beer) is fired through a hop back, a unique four-barrel stainless steel tank filled with a gratuitous amount of raw flower Amarillo, Centennial, and Cascade hops, extracting the aromatic oils and flavor of the hops. Followed with additional dry hopping in the fermenter, the end result is a big, well-balanced West Coast-style IPA with terrific hop flavor and aroma.

Draught. Nose of grassy hops, citrus, lemon. Flavor of sweet orange, earthy bitterness, citrus. Very sweet, and then very bitter. Decently made, orthodox, but somehow pedestrian IPA.

Golden amber color. Earthy, pine and caramel in the nose. Well balanced, not too heavy, moderately bitter, well balanced. Easy drinking but enjoyable. Really nice lingering finish.

On draught at Puckett’s Grocery in Franklin. Cloudy orange-gold color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of grassy hops, malt and citrusy. Medium body with a citrusy hops character and notes of earthy malt and pine. The finish is hoppy with a zesty citrus aftertaste. Above average overall.

Pours a cloudy, orangeish-yellow with minimal head. Very strong hop aroma. Flavor is a nice, smooth combination of piney-hop bitterness with citrus notes and a sweet finish. This is really a very good IPA--surprised I haven’t heard of it before.

12 oz bottle from Pepsican. Nose is light citrus and very grassy, earthy hops mixed with a little malt backbone. Cloudy amber orange with a big lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is bitter with bits of lemon and grass along with a hint of coffee in the background.

Dripping with resinous hops, this IPA packs a surprisingly bitter punch, wringing every last west coast IBU from the recipe. The malts give a grainy, meek background, one barely noticeable in the face of such massive piney massiveness. Good nose, even with a hint of metallic ick. The texture isn’t that great-- the beer seems overcarbonated and spiky, too harsh when coupled with a sandpaper-dry finish. Good but one is plenty.

12 twist off bottle, purchased somewhere in Lake Okoboji, Iowa, enjoyed on the boat. Pour is a darker copper, mostly clear with a one inch light tan head. Aroma is resin, caramel malt and a pleasant earthiness. Taste is nice bitter, resin, touch of dank hops along with a significant caramel malt backbone. Clean. The palate is medium bodied, dry resinous finish. Nice one.
