Tap at CBM Koenji. Dark amber. Chocolate and light spice aroma. Taste is interesting, sharp hoppiness, dark fruit, but of spike, some caramel. Interesting. --- Beer merged from original tick of Hoppy Holidays on 09 Sep 2019 at 16:05 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 8. Tap at Watering Hole. Caramel forward nose with some dark fruit, chocolate and a bit of earthy hops as it warms. Palate is pretty much the same with the malts really dominating and fruity esters in second. Finish is slightly bitter with earthy and grassy notes. Not bad. --- Beer merged from original tick of Hoppy Holidays on 25 Apr 2016 at 20:17 - Score: 6. Original review text: Caramel on the nose, dark fruit....some chocolate dry warty hops. Not bad.

I guess when the name starts with "Hoppy" i expect a hoppy beer- this was not that. Caramel in color, the aroma and flavor is mostly sweeter malts, chocolate, and sweet bread, with little hop presence at all. Smooth body and a sweet, clean finish. This is not a bad beer at all. It’s just completely nondeScript, doesn’t live up to the Hoppy moniker, and easily forgettable. Basically, a well-brewed snoozer.

First up is Hoppy Holidays a 7.5% winter ale that pours a deep reddish brown with a beige head. The aroma is malty caramel, a touch of fudge, some spice & hops. Medium-full body with a velvety smooth mouthfeel. The taste is solid chocolate, dark fruits, light spice and earthy hops. Good stuff at not at all what I was expecting. A really nice winter beer.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a dark reddish-amber color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, chocolate and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of sweet malt, caramel and earthy hops. The finish is malty up front with a hoppy aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours clear darkly copper/brown with a very slight beige head. Aroma of dark roasty malt with hints of chocolate and something suggesting hop. Near full bodied. Flavor is roasty, a little nutty, has some chocolate, and there’s some bitter which could be hop. The malt flavor is pretty dominant, so it’s hard to pick out a hop type. Still, this stuff isn’t all that sugary, and there’s bitter in the finish. Pretty drinkable stuff.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of alcohol, a bit of earthy hops, some deep caramel and toffee with a grassy and herbal kick at the end. Medium-bodied; Assertive hoppy flavour at first with earth and grass very strong, some pungent alcohol, all with a good and defined toasted malt backbone. Aftertaste shows some nice malt, a good dose of hops (but not overpowering) and a pleasant sweetness, very well balanced. Overall, a nice beer, I’m not sure why it’s rating isn’t higher - this is balanced and still showing a hint of complexity - nice. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington on 11-January-2013 for US$5.99 sampled at home in the real Washington on 02-February-2013.

On tap at The Burgundian Tavern, pours a dark amber / brown with a small beige head. Aroma of holiday spices, citrusy hops and roasted malt, like a spicy black IPA. Flavour is very similar, with the spice more dominant than the black IPA component character. There are some chocolate and candied notes in there as well. Solid stuff.
