If you’re tired of run-of-the-mill flavors, maybe some coffee and exotic spices will perk you up. We gathered 5BEANS from the bazaar to create a cultural phenomenon; a melting pot of cacao, vanilla, coffee, and cardamom creates our original Turkish inspired porter. It’s Mad Science.

Can at Cafe Hesp, Amsterdam. Near black with a medium thick tan head. Aroma of coffee, cardamom coming on strong, overripe dark fruits, spicy, cocoa, subdued vanilla and caramel. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter. Medium to full bodied with above light carbonation.

Can from Craft Beer & Wine in Alameda. It pours a very dark brown/black color with a frothy tan head. The aroma is strong with roasted coffee and grains with noticeable smoke. I do get a hint of cardamom and cinnamon as well. The flavor is the same with cardamom and cinnamon coming through stronger up front followed by strong coffee, roasted grains and dark chocolate. It’s pretty rich on the palate with some light snappy acidity from the coffee. I really enjoyed this one.

Can. Black with full tan head. Strong aroma’s of coffee and cardamon. Bold.

Flavor is layered. Big chocolate, cocoa powder, roasted coffee bean, maybe traces of vanilla. The only draw back is the cardamon is pretty sharp in the finish. The body is full for a porter with the alcohol being completely hidden. I like the brew overall but the cardamon rides the line of being overdone.

Draft at Common Market. Opaque dark brown color, thick beige head with good retention and solid lacing, which makes me think it’s on nitro. Aroma of roasty dark fruit on a coffee background. Taste is roast, plum, date, coffee. I like that it’s a porter first, with the coffee in support.

New Beer Distributors, NYC can: pours black with a beige head. Aroma is dark coffee, vanilla, light smoke, hints of chocolate. Taste is roasty almost a bit burnt. Some bitterness. Good bit of sweetness but not cloying. Easy to drink for the high abv.

Can shared by Kyle, thanks! Pours black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a very strong, bitter coffee note with roasted malts and dark grains backing. Flavor has more dark grains and roasted malts but finish is strong bitter coffee.

Can from West Side. Pours a deep brown with a finger of beige foam that lingers. Big coffee forward nose with hazelnut and treacle notes. Light bodied and booze hidden so well. Cacao and coffee finish. Really good coffee imperial porter. --- Beer merged from original tick of 5Beans on 13 Nov 2016 at 21:11 - Score: 8.
