Not your typical “Jelly of the Month Club” beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Dark, rich, and roasty, but with a lighter feel than expected, modestly carbonated and somewhat thin. Works flavor-wise, however, with heavy notes of char, dark chocolate, and anise backed by undertones of black cherry, date, and molasses. Thankfully restrained with the lactose; the beer merely flirts with cocoa indulgence rather than turning into a pint of fudge. Finishes moderately bitter with hints of espresso and roast. Texture could use a little beefing up, but otherwise a good stout. Slightly better than it scores.

Can: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet cocoa notes with light roasted malt notes is very dessert-like. Taste is a mix of sweet coca notes with some black chocolate, some light roasted malt with some residual sugar notes. Body is full with nice creamy notes with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable dessert stout.

On tap at Maloney’s in Matawan. Opaque black pour. No head. Roasted malt nose. Sweet roasted malt flavor with notes of cocoa and sweet dark coffee. Rich and flavorable. Bittersweet cocoa finish.

Dark body, almost completely opaque black body with a thick, three to four centimetre tall rich tan head. Aroma of fresh grain, a touch of caramel and toffee with a big hit of vanilla and very dry roasted oatmeal and some specialty grains. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasty flavour with some grain noticeable at first, but a smooth sweetness showing lactose, cream, alcohol, caramel, toffee, but an underlying and very strong cognac or brandy type flavour that shows seemingly way more alcohol than 7,0%. Aftertaste is pungent, not too complex, but showing a lot of depth with the roasted malts the strongest, along with some grain and of course the caramel and toffee sweetness that hits quite hard. Overall, a nicely structured and well-flavoured pungent sweet stout that shows a good level of sweetness, but still a lot of malt and vanilla notes, but leaving the palate relatively clean. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can purchased a few minutes ago from Whole Foods in New York (Bowery), New York on 23-February-2018 for US$3,99 sampled in my hotel room here in New York on 23-February-2018.

Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a black color with a huge creamy dark brown head that lingered forever and left excellent lacing. The aroma was sweet chocolate, anise and toasty malts. The flavor was sweet and malty with black licorice, cocoa and vanilla. Very long finish. Full bodied and smooth. Excellent.

Bottle, thanks Eddan. Black with a large tan head. Sweet and creamy with chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and some "milk". The body was almost full and the finish quite long.
