What’s this? A British-style IPA named after the man who defeated His Majesty’s Royal Navy in the War of 1812? Consider this a bold, hoppy (and mildly ironic) plunder of war.

Reviewed from notes, and actually I’ve only ever had just a couple times through trades.
Always in a pint glass with this one, here we go.
The appearance was a gentle light golden amber to orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dies within less than about forty seconds. There’s a good amount of lacing kinda going all over the place not forming any real speckled or spider web or even rings. Honestly, it looks kinda sloppy.
The smell had a decent amount of English malts mainly just coming in front just a tad of some bitter piney hops.
The taste was balanced more between the malts and hops, so I’d say it was a good bittersweetness.
On the palate, it sat about a medium on the body with a decent sessionable quality about it. The carbonation seemed appropriate for the style and for me.
Overall, I say this was a good EIPA worthy of having again. Good job Great Lakes.

12oz bottle from Wegman’s, Buffalo. A hazy amber pour with a ring of white head; sweet, malty aroma with ruby grapefruit; sjharp, grapefruity taste, with a rich, chewy, buttery body; and a clean, crisp, dry, finish. A very pleasant IPA with well hidden strength,

Bottle drunk 4/17/14
Peachy-gold body has some deeper amber tints to it, while the medium-sized white head fades quickly to cover.
Honey, peaches, cinnamon?, ruby red grapefruit and lots of gooey white bread like sweetness in the nose leads more to a British style IPA. Black pepper, some grassiness and a fair amount of caramel malt all play nicely together and the evil pine resin never comes remotely close. Fruity, for sure, but kind of like those canned peaches or canned mandarin oranges. No alcohol, which is impressive at this level.
A very odd beer, not that it tastes bad or anything, just a lot of stuff going on that I wouldnt normally think would work well. The carbonation and mouthfeel are a bit flabby, leading to some looseness/wateriness and the sugars, very well present here, contribute a slick texture. The hops show very low bitterness, tons of orange, ruby red grapefruit and plenty of grassiness. Somehow, the beer seems to work out in spite of itself. The wateriness helps break up some of the sweetness, while the bitterness that is present is able to balance the rest and the actual flavors themselves are quite enjoyable.

Burnt orange Nose is citrus and burnt caramel taste is resinous. Chalky with gingerbread cookies. Uber piney.

On tap at Great Lakes Brewing at CLE. Pours a clear dark amber with one finger white head that leaves nice lace. Nose is heavy pine and citrus. Nice bitter grapefruit to start and an excellent long dry finish. Body is medium light with average carbonation. Nice IPA but not much to differentiate it.

Nearly clear amber/orange with a small, cream head. Caramel, pine, citrus aroma. Taste is syrupy/fruity, resiny. Very smooth and sweet. Almost into clingy territory.

Bottle poured a pretty clear, light golden color with a pretty large white head. Aroma was a lot of tropical fruit notes, citrus and a nice malt undercurrent. Pretty well balanced, plenty of pine, hops and a nice caramel malt character. Flavor is pretty darn nice. Liked it.

Light Copper Color, Huge Foamy Head, Last Long and Leaves Lots Of Lacing. Strong Pine Aroma. Sweet Malt, Pine, Nice Hop Bitter. Medium Body, Nice Oily Mouth feel, Dry Finish. No sign of high ABV, well hidden 7.5%, only later it hits you. I like marketing gimmick of honoring historic figure. For one, you have to be confident that your beer is that good and you honor someone, otherwise you might be shaming the guy and he turning restless in his grave. All good with this one, I think, it is a great tribute. Second, if anyone ask me what I did last night, I’m able to say, that I studied or at very least brushed up on my history. And that would not be a lie. Hey, it is that good, that you could become a history buff in no time. Nice IPA. I’ve enjoyed it. Recommended.

From a 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark gold with a thick white head. Citrus aroma with some hint of straw. Orange and grapefruit notes dominate the taste with a pronounced hop bitterness. Nice IPA.
