Aged for 12 months in 10-year-old Kentucky bourbon oak barrels in abandoned limestone mines accentuates a robust sweet maltiness and slight herbal hop bitterness. This alluring dark liquid hides within it undertones of vanilla, oak, cocoa and coffee. But beware, at 12% a draught of this fine ale just may be your ticket straight down to Davey Jones’ Locker!

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is bourbon upfront with oak, raisins, notes of tobacco, dark malt, figs, overripe fruits. Flavour is tart and fairly sour, not the flavour I like in a Bourbon aged Porter. Body is medium. Most likely infected, dark fruity sourness. Ugh, too bad.

355ml bottle. Quasi black colour with small, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Roasty, chocolately, dark malty aroma, hints of oak, a touch of cocoa and coffee, vanilla overtones. Taste is bitter, roasty dark malty, slightly bitter hoppy, tannic oaky, slightly alcoholic, hints of Bourbon, vanilla, a slightly alcohol-amalgamated herbal touch, a cautious touch of chocolate, cocoa and coffee. Oily to viscous texture, smooth and soft, slightly cloying palate. Quite rich, but a bit disharmonious, edged, brutish, out-of-round.

Bottle. Almost black. Dried fruit and marzipan in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with cocos, marzipan, dried fruit, raisin. Maybe the first signs of an upcoming sourness, but this beer is still in fine shape. Hints of oak, vanilla and well integrated bourbon.

2016 bottle purchased in Michigan. Pours a pitch black with a small beige head that dissipates. Roasted malt, coffee, plum and tart cherry aromas. Light brett notes as it warms. Slick and oily mouthfeel, with spritzy carbonation. More roasty malt and coffee notes. Lingering sourness. Tastes like something is off though, weird bretty sourness going on.

Bottle. Woody bourbon, chocolate malt, and dry hay aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Moderately sweet chocolate, vanilla, toasted bread malt, bourbon, and moderately bitter dry hay flavor. Great body and blending. Delicious.

The Twelve Beer of my #6000 celebration (#12 of 13 - six beers on either side of 6000 and the milestone itself). Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, two centimetre tall light brown head that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, light chocolate, bourbon, oak, vanilla, tobacco, caramel and a light dose of soy sauce. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with a great chocolate flavour along with some cacao power, toffee, pit fruits, oak, vanilla and some smooth coffee notes near the end. Aftertaste is robust and very complex with some tobacco coupled with a lot of caramelised sugar notes, pit fruits and the oak really lengthens out the flavour with vanilla, bourbon and some smooth malt and peat notes. Overall, a very nice beer with a great flavour and smooth and deep complexity that hits all the right notes; If there was one thing I’d complain about, it’s the body which is a touch thin for the style, but the complexity and flavours more than make up for it. Nice to sample, and the time in the bottle probably helped out this one a bit. I sampled this foil topped, twelve ounce bottle purchased from Seaway Party Store in Grand Haven, Michigan on 09-September-2015 for US$8,49 sampled at home in Washington as #6005 as my #6000 beer celebration on 28-March-2017.
