Deep in the rainforests of Madagascar lies one of the most coveted spices ever discovered: the decadent, aromatic, vanilla bean.

In 4BEANS, a rich brew of beans and barley—a special blend of liquid aged in rye whiskey and bourbon barrels— meets Madagascar Vanilla to fuse Baltic myth and treasured spice. 4Beans has returned!

4Beans is a dark, rich porter with tons of complexity. There’s ample roastiness, accents from barrel-aging, and tons of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla.

Admin Note: This version hit national Sixpoint Distribution network and was rye whiskey and bourbon barrel aged.

(Thanks, Roman! mansquito) Can. A- Brownie batter, vanilla. A- Black color, dark liquid, light brown head. T- Dark chocolate fudge, vanilla, mild bourbon. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, luscious finish. O- This was 3 years old and damn fine. The coffee was pretty minimal at this point but loads of dark rich chocolate with a faint bourbon oak and vanilla supporting act just made this a great brew. Very satisfying, I wish I could get cases of it.

(Can) Pours black with tiny brown head. Good aroma of coffee, dark roast malt, molasses. Full bodied, smooth, somewhat sticky with fine carbonation. Great taste both rich and bitter. There’s dark toffee sweetness and coffee bitterness and alcohol heat. There’s hints of vanilla. Very enjoyable.

Can—aged two years past the brew date. Virtually black with a creamy, beige head that lingers. Aroma full of vanilla and whiskey barrel with a little fudge underneath. A promising start to a dessert beer, even if not particularly nuanced. Taste is less balanced—dominated by an overly sweet vanilla up front, finishing rough and boozy with lots of cheap whiskey. Unbalanced and unnecessarily strong. Workmanlike—there’s no inspiration here, just a bunch of things thrown in the barrel and the requisite high ABV. Full-bodied with a moderate to prickly carbonation that’s a touch too much. Drinkable but in the lower half of the style.

From a 355ml can on 23/5/2019. Pours a deep brown with a small head. Has a strong whisky and oak aroma , with undertones of cocoa and chocolate. This is a bit of a weird beastie. Lots of whisky, oak and and booze up front, followed by lots of sweetness which makes the beer quite mellow and stupidly easy to down. Following the big barrel aged onslaught, it’s mainly chocolate, cocoa, caramel and vanilla, with just the barest hint of coffee. Finishes with a modest roasty, boozy bitterness at the back. The palate is slick and the carbonation softish. A straight forward but enjoyable dessert beer.

Pour is a almost black with a large tan head. Aroma is pretty much all whiskey barrel and that is a good thing. Lots of oak tannins and vanilla. Flavor is more oak and vanilla with a slash of coffee but a huge alcohol hotness. Iiked where this was going but this was way too boozy. Tame the alcohol a bit and you may have something here.

Weird how I like porters, coffee, and rye whiskey, but I’m only lukewarm on BA 4Beans. The whiskey’s far and away in control of this pint, with vanilla and coffee mixing with modest porter notes and a spiky, somewhat harsh texture. Just seems too reliant on the barrel; the beer itself gets lost in the shuffle.

12 ounce tube can. Opaque black color. Small creamy tan head. Roasted malt nose hints at cocoa. First sip yields notes of bourbon, cocoa and coffee. Rich and flavorful. Sticky mouthfeel.
