Clear, dark chestnut with mahogany and ruddy hues, as well. Dark beige head shows moderate retention.
Gorgeous nose shows a really tastefully done barrel aging allowing light bourbon spiciness to mix in to the wonderfully malty, fruity dubbel character. Raisin, plum, fig, vanilla, honey, nougat....it's all here and well-balanced by the bourbon, with no alcohol, sharpness, toasted oak or huge malt sweetness.
In the mouth it's equally impressive. Great attenuation shows good dryness yet there's rich, supple, deep malts adding light caramel and raisin, hints of milk chocolate and plenty of honey. Add to this the Belgian esters, spicy bourbon and light wood character and you've got a balanced, flavorful, complex beer. They didn't get famous for nothing on their strong Belgian ales and when you take that base beer and do a fantastic job with the barrel, obviously it's going to come out really nice. Low, tight carbonation, surprisingly little/no alcohol. Very clean.

A most fortunate acquisition from a Total Wine in north Dallas a few weeks ago, the 12 oz bottle has been chilled and is ready to go into my Chimay glass. It pours an attractive caramel brown body with a thin, light tan head that promptly dissipates. It does appear to have an active carbonation though. The smell matches the appearance in attractiveness, malt, yeast, dark fruit. But it is the taste I have been waiting for. Wow, I know now why Double Barrel has been well received. A cascade of flavors, all good, figs, dates, hard candy, malt, a hint of vanilla and chocolate, go figure. A bit boozy, it ends with a small bitterness. Very complete, it hits all the bases I appreciate in a dubbel, comparable to the best from Belgium.

Bottle - huge toffee and dark fruit complexity in this one - creamy texture - fruit skin and spice to balance out the sweetness - not boozy or overly sticky - just a kiss of oak - very nice.

Sampled from a bottle this beer poured a murky dark brown color with a large foamy orange-tan head that left good lacing. The aroma was sweet and malty with a toffee note. The flavor was sweet and malty with chocolate, bourbon, molasses, cherry and vanilla elements. Very long finish. Moderately full bodied.
