One of the earliest examples of Russian Imperial Stouts in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with aging in mind.

A huge malt body is matched with a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruit and other aromas. The flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages in your cellar.

Pours a solid black that lets no light through. Tanish head that dissipates quickly, but leaves lots of marks down the surface of the glass. Aroma is wine like, with roasted malts, licorice, some chocolate and coffee too. Taste is sweet. I pick up some dried fruit, molasses, some roast and some faint hop or roast bitterness in the end. Mouthfeel is thick, and a bit sweet. Almost leaves my lips sticky like my kids with candy. Not your average Imp Stout, but I love this stuff. Bells continues to impress me!!

Opaque brown - black stout. Rich sumptuos beer. Smooth, thick and silky. Fruity note in the mid of sweet cherry and a trace of peach. Finishes with a smooth mildly roasty malt and a slightly bitter aftertaste. All very smooth! The fruity mid really makes this stout.

355 ml bottle, kindly shared by gunnar. ABV 10.5%. Pitch black colour, low head. Strong and intense aroma of heavily roasted malts, cigar box, burnt caramel and oak. Equally strong and intense flavour, again heavily roasted malts, burnt caramel and oak. Pretty impressive stuff.

12 oz. bottle sent from Glouglouburp, pours deep black with a thin coffee head. Unbelievable rich aroma of dark chocolate, rich roasted espresso, wood and burnt caramel. Hard to beat the complexity on this - somewhat sweet, dark chocolate upfront, with burnt caramel coming through the middle and espresso on the finish, with an every so slight lingering bitterness. What a beer.

I picked this up at Archer Liquors in Chicago, IL, enjoyed on a Friday night at home. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, dark roast coffee, and a little bit of hops that if anything adds a hint of spices. Appearance is pitch black with a very small tan head. Taste is very creamy and rich. Very rich in dark chocolate and coffee, hops are somewhere in there and provides a hint of bitterness, it’s not flat but not carbonated. For a 10.5% ABV it doesn’t taste like it packs the punch it actually does. It’s a cool Chicago night and a great one to enjoy this.

Bottle expensively procured from the Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam. Black pour with a tan head. Nice roasty, toasty nose. Plenty of toffee, coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, butterscotch in there. Good, rich flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee and brown sugar. Dry as a bone finish with an underlying smoky feel. Yum, yum!

Pretty fresh bottle. Pitch black with a fine, thick, tan, oily head that stayed forever. Beautiful. Dry, subtle aroma with berries, lots of alcohol fumes, and something rather unusual for a stout, like bubble gum or rubber, or even thinner. Funky-sweet flavor with strong alcohol, fruit (berries), mint, licorice. Full, thick, oily body. Hot and rather weird but great.

355ml Bottle, brought to A’dam by GodOfThunder, thanks! Black beer, brown head. Aroma of hard roasted malts, a bit of liquorice, some vegetable notes from the alcohol, berries. Flavour is hard roasted malts, alcohol, vegetable cooking water, lots of brown sugary sweetness, chocolate mousse, coffee, hoppy and piney bitter finish with a coffee aftertaste. Fullbodied, oily and thick mouthfeel. Didn’t dig the vegetable notes, otherwise a very good imperial stout. Have another bottle to re-rate.

At a tasting, thanks, DSG, no head, almost completely opaque dark, aromas of bread, coffee, barnyard and brown sugar, flavours of dark fruit, coffee and burned sugar like on the top of a cream broule, smooth and rich but a little bit one dimensional.
