This big mother of a Russian Imperial Stout is often considered one of our true classics. Despite the 13% ABV, you'll find Black Albert to be dangerously drinkable. With its thick, tar-like body, it's definitely a sipper, but the alcohol is very well-hidden.

33 cl. bottle poured in to a snifter. As "Batch 0". Jet black with a big, tan head. Aroma with hard roasted malts, vanilla, caramel, licorice, berries and bitter, dark chocolate. Taste is sweet. Full body, oily feel, soft carbonation - almost velvet like. Long lasting bitter roasted finish, no sign of the 13 % alc. Some yeasts and herbs. Almost a vinous stout, bloody well balanced. Very, very good.

Bottle from the Bottle Shop, Canterbury 241212
Jet black, dark tan frothy head that disspated to a thin rim around glass, touch of lacing
Aroma of dark deep fruity malts, some port wine, touch of chocolate, very soft roast, getting a hint of yeast, alcohol pretty well hidden for the high abv
Taste - Complex, very rich dark fruity malts, chocolate, port wine, quite vinous, soft mellow roasted malts, dark sugars, touch of treacle, touch of charcoal, rich meaty flavours, superb flavoured stout, some alcohol but pretty well hidden for 13% and really well balanced
Palate - Soft carb, full thick body. Palate is fairly sweet but not too sweet. Thick smooth quite syrupy texture. Finish as main flavour, warming alcohol, some dryness with a nice well balanced linger of plain chocolate, rich dark fruits, soft mocha with some sweet dark malts.
Overall - This is a very fruity Imperial Stout - it’s complex but not very complex. Good balance and has great flavour. The alcohol does become more noticeable after a while but it’s another super beer from Struise

Purchased at de Bier Tempel in Brussels, Belgium; enjoyed at a friends house in Chicago, IL while having a horrible time transferring some damaged homebrew. This one was pretty good though! Appearance is pitch black, very thick, light tan head. Aroma is very rich in chocolate malt with additional notes of cocoa and light belgian yeast. Taste also super thick, very rich in chocolate with a light spice. Good stuff, happy to have had it, definitely one of the thickest stouts I’ve had.

Bottle at home (hand written 0 on the cap BA. No. 14) - 19/12/12. Pours pitch black with a thin tan head that clings to the edge and leaves a small swirl of a film atop the glass. Nose is roast malt, dark fruits, molasses, bitter chocolate, treacle, leather, touch of wood. Taste comprises dark roast malt, bitter chocolate, dark fruits, prunes, dates, mineral tones. Perfect on the palate, full bodied, smooth, rich, oily. A great imperial stout.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a medium creamy dark brown head that has great staying power and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is coffee, floral, dark roasted malts, cocoa. Flavor is about the same, plus dried fruits. Quite sweet and a medium coffee-citric bitterness that lingers through the finish. Medium, perhaps a bit lighter than medium, bodied. ABV well masked in the aroma and body, but comes on strong in the warming finish.

33cl bottle from brewery shop in Brugge - a black body, almost oil-like, with a dirty looking thick brown head which last some time. The nose is chocolate, liquorice, blackcurrants, coffee, very complex as new notes hit the nostrils. The taste is the same, a bit of vanilla, cherry and some spices come through as well. Oily in the mouth, a boozy warmth at the end. I like this a lot. Shame I didn’t buy more than one!

33cl bottle. Black colour with a medium tan head that quickly diminishes but maintaining a thin layer. Aroma is toasty, dark cofffee, chocolate and red fruits. Flavor is very similar as aroma, with roasted malts notes, traces of red qnd dryed fruits, vanilla, cocoa. On palate is smooth, rounded and very dense. The final is long with notes of dark coffee, caramel, chocolate and light bittery. Where are the 100 IBU, they are hidden by alcohol, roasted malts and red fruits. A really impressive beer.
