Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, many say, and if you are a beer geek there is no better way to start the day than with a powerful, complex morning stout.

This is the beer that started it all for Mikkeller. Oatmeal Stout brewed with coffee and seven different kind of malt (Pils, Oat, Smoked, Caramunich, Brown, Pale Chocolate, Chocolate), roasted barley, oat flakes, hops (Centennial, Cascade), American ale yeast and gourmet coffee. Aroma is a combination of malts, caramel, chocolate and coffee. The body is medium with light coffee and chocolate flavors with a creamy texture, average carbonation and a bitter edge on the finish. A beer that goes extremely well with breakfast.

Bottle from Parkvillan, Åre. It has quite a bold coffee profile but otherwise I found it to have a sikcly thickness. I wasn't a huge fan and slightly confused by high rating. Aroma was plain.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Pours cloudy black with a slowly thinning, frothy, dark beige head. Aroma of pure coffee bean, brown bread, oats, chestnut, fondant, walnut shell, some dried dark fruit. Taste has a medium bitter core of pure coffee bean, toast & dark chocolate, sweetish malty impressions of brown bread, grainy oats & nuts, faintest touch of vanilla & dark fruits, perhaps even a bit leathery umami. Dry, toasty, earthy hoppy finish, more brown bread, toast & nicely warming coffee liqueur-like alcohol. Medium to full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Very oaty, lots of coffee, liquid breakfast all in all.

Smell- medium strong, roast malt, caramel, dark chocolate coffee. Foam- medium-thick to thick, roast, dark chocolate notes, a bit of malt. The Head is a medium, dark brown color. Appearance - generic silver bottle cap, simple bottle with some classic Mikkeller style art not the same as in picture given, but similar concept. Very dark brown, red color, but so dark it looks like it is black. Some weak active nice-looking carbonation. From - stout glass Taste - roast, bitterness, coffee, malt. Weak sweetness and more malt and coffee later. Despite having a lot of roast and bitterness seems very drinkable, some alcohol notes are noticeable. Nothing wrong with it, but don't see why the score is so big though. Maybe not my style.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 30A/16B). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 02101809:46 (BBF 02/10/28). AROMA: medium-high coffee aroma with a slight coffee-and-cream character (slightly sweet). APPEARANCE: very dark brown color and opaque. medium brown head, creamy, with good retention. lace formation. TASTE: medium-high coffee flavor with a faint roasted barley note. medium bitterness with a dry and coffee finish. PALATE: medium-low body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: a sub-par oatmeal stout completely overwhelmed by a strong coffee presence.

Bottle from Olbutikken. Opague, dark brown head. Licorice and pineapple in the aroma. Licorice in the malty sweet flavor. Full bodied. Pleasant roast character. Coffee, pineapple and cacao. Abundant with flavors and aromas and not without character and complexity.

Opaque with a big brown head. Toasty malt in the aroma but some hoppiness too. Tastes of coffee, dark chocolate, dry malt, zesty citrus hop, a little aniseed. A few things going on but balanced out nicely with a lasting, dry aftertaste. Rich and smooth as you'd hope for from an oatmeal stout.

Keg at Mother Kelly's E2. Sweet sugary porridge and coffee aroma Dark. A red tint. Creamy beige head shrinks to the rim. Heavy bitter. Underlying creaminess. But it's all about espresso and liquorice. Medium bodied. Creamy. Average carbonatio. Long astringent. I suspect that this is a classic but for me it's completely in your face bitterness.
