This is Rival IPA and it is an “over the top” ale that uses pale crystal and rye malts. This beer also uses Bravo, Nugget and whole flower Chinook hops (in the hopback). If that’s not enough fun, Rival is then dry-hopped with Centennial, Citra, Simcoe and Columbus hops.

Nice pour from bottle with red brown. White head. Sweet rye bread but a bit harsh and overly hopped.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with large spongy beige head, faint floral hops aroma, low carbonation, mildly bitter lightly piney taste, smooth body, longish finish. Very smooth and mellow thanks to the rye.

12 oz bottle from Buy Rite. Pours a murky orange color with a thin, beige head and some light lace. Rye and spice aroma, mild fruity notes. Drinks bready, with spice, and some light bitterness. Lively carbonation. Okay, not my favorite.

Rich light brown and a deep copper and bronze body with a bright pumpkin coloured glow and a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rye (what else?), grain, alcohol, hops, earth and a touch of caramel and brown sugars. Medium-bodied; Assertive grain and rye flavour with some mellow earth and a little sweetness and a touch of hops noticeable. Aftertaste is relatively simple with a touch of sugars and some faint rye and hops - nothing special here. Overall, a pretty disappointing beer with not much hops, not much rye and no complexity at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 02-August-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 24-September-2015 to celebrate the Pope coming to Philadelphia (and Washington/New York).

Bottled 12/16/2014.
This was poured into a nonic.
The appearance was a nice looking hazy burnt orange to ruddy red color with barely any head to it. What lacing is there slides.
The smell starts off with a fairly decent sweet to light spicy rye malt. There’s a slight sweet fresh grassiness to it.
The taste took the sweet/spicy rye and allowed in a tad caramel malt to balance.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed good for the style though a bit old on the date, still I bet if fresher, this would portray everything necessary for a good Rye IPA.
Overall, I get it. It works for me as a Rye AIPA. Hopefully, I’ll find another fresher.

That bocktwon monaca sure is a nice place. This was on tap there. Big head on this rye smellin IPA. Some lacing, no co2 on the palate. Typical rude roto tillin taste across my buds. What else can be said except that it’s freshly and terribly on style. Go figger.

12 ounce bottle. Bright amber orange color. Medium-sized rocky beige head. Nice clinging lace. Fragrant toasted malt nose with notes of spicy rye grain and pine hops. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor. Complex spicy hops with peppery notes. Finishes dry with a touch of grapefruit peel in the aftertaste. Very good.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized fizzy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of rye, floral and pine hops, and mild caramel malts. The taste is floral hops, caramel malts, mild rye. Medium bodied, slight lingering bitterness.
