Almost clear deep reddish amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Airy malts, some light cream and a mild sweetness. Light tangerine and orange peel. Hop spice, well buried. Pithy bitterness and then hop spice increasing. Semi dry finish. Lacks hop brightness but it’s alright.

Little hazy deep orange beer, big creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very sweet, sugary, overripe banana, some vanilla. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter hoppy start, grassy, bit sweet, tropical fruits, citrus, grapefruit. Aftertaste: very bitter, citrus, more grapefruit, fruity finish, caramel malts, bit sweet in the end.

IIPA from a Dutch brewery I never heard of so far, bottle from Wijnegemse Drankenhal. Heavily cobweb-lacing, pale yellowish egg-white, irregular, moussy head over a clear, warm coppery amber coloured beer with bright orange hue, turning misty and deeper amber with sediment. Aroma of dried grapefruit peel, caramel, old cake, biscuit, dry tea leaves, (unsmoked) cigarette tobacco, barbecue spices, marmelade, black radish, fried potatoes, Grand Marnier, fresh toast, green banana, wild roses, dry tree leaves in autumn, soap, strawberry - in all, quite agreeable, but not very typically DIPA-like. Fruity onset, dried fig, green banana, blue plum mixing subdued sweetness with a soft background sourishness, medium carbonated, supple and smooth, lean body. Toasted, caramelly and nutty malt middle with lingering dried fruit impressions, bittersweet and quite ’filling’, leading to a drying, resinous finish of earthy, spicy hops leaving a tonic water-like bitter flavor in the back of the mouth, but in a somewhat ’superficial’, mild and gentle way, whilst yielding retronasal floral and spice aromas (the latter probably partly phenolic as well). Traces of toasted malt bittersweetness peep through in the end while the - considerable - alcohol, all things considered, remains quite well hidden. Earthy yeast flavors also linger - not too disturbing as such, but not fit for the style either. Technically fine, even pleasant beer, but clearly too earthy, too malty and a tad too yeasty for a DIPA, in need of a more fragrant, in-your-face, New World hop bouquet even though apparently Citra and Cascade have been applied (but apparently insufficiently so, not delivering the lush tropical citrus aromas they are capable of if generously and correctly used). Enjoyed it after all, but not what I was expecting from something identifying itself as a "double IPA"; I do think, however, that the wood-aged version, which is waiting now in the cellar, could bring some improvement to this bitter, but not all too aromatic, (overly) malty and yeasty interpretation of DIPA.

Bouteille 33cl, bottled 05/2016. Logo just oddly familiar to Trou du Diable.
