Anachronism is inspired by the German Grätzer style, brewed to capture the earthy, nuanced notes of oak smoked wheat malt. We ferment this ale with our preferred Kveik (Norweigian farmhouse culture) to create a balance between rustic and refreshing. Our latest batch is brewed with CT grown, malted, and maple smoked wheat from Thrall Family Malt.

Bottle from Modern Liquors. Hazy, pale golden, high foamy head fades to small cap. Funky fruity, tart aroma, leads into smoky grainy taste. Not what I was expecting. Labelled as a Gratzer, so it harks back to an earlier time. White grapes, ashy grains, tart and smoky. Give it a while. Initial assault is tempered with time and temperature.

Bottle at home. Oddly colored brew. Nose is light smoke and bready. Tastes very doughy, some salt and pepper, earthy, wheat Odd palate and aftertaste I can’t put finger on. Enjoyed second glass more than first but still a weird one.

Tap at Ginger Man, New York. Colour is clear golden with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Grain, some sweetness, some dryness, hints of smoke and malts. Weird.

50cl bottle pours a clear gold with some creamy, white head. Nose has candy, yeast, dried pineapple, straw. Flavor has some candy sweetness, mild spice, yeast, some cheese rind. Creamy finish. Alright.

Bottle, batch 1, drunk 12/15/15.
Pale golden body is topped by an initially large, white head that shows moderate to moderately-high retention. Good clarity, with only a gentle haze to it.
Smoke in the nose is immediately followed by heavy dough. Not the good type either. Just a very pervasive smell of unbaked bread dough with yeast freshly added. The smoke is gentle, dry and very tastefully done, but the doughiness nearly ruins the nose. Not much else gets through, perhaps a bit of lemon and light vanilla character.
Much better in the mouth, however, as notes of lightly tart lemon, soft, dry smokiness and creamy wheat all come together harmoniously. Still some definite doughiness on the finish, but it’s far less problematic in the flavor than aroma. Carbonation is moderately tight, though showing a bit of looseness and making for a rather watery texture overall. But that’s fine and the beer is obviously intended as a very quenching, session/table beer. A bit of earthiness and dried herbal quality from the hops, but I certainly don’t get any of the pine from the commercial deScription (which is a good thing, as that would be very out-of-place in this beer). Along the lines of Oxbow’s Bowie, but the heavy doughiness/raw yeast from the nose really knocks it down quite a few notches. Would love to try another bottle in a month or two to see if this character goes away, though I’m not sure I’ll have the opportunity.
