Autumn ushers in an annual rebirth with a full harvest, longer nights, and in many cases, a new wardrobe. We’re celebrating the bounty of the season with a new beer that’s coming out in cans this week — Autumnation. Brewed with pumpkin, ginger and white pepper, and wet-hopped with just-harvested Citra hops from the oldest continually farmed hop farm in the country, it’s a burst of fresh, seasonal spices trapped in a 16-ounce. can.

What does wet-hopping mean? It’s adding freshly harvested hops to beer in their natural form (not ground and pelletized), which can only happen at one point every year.

Admin Note: Citra version was brewed in 2011 and 2012.

Cannned. Foamy pour like most sixpoints, hoppy floral aroma, light caramel taste. Ok.

Can at JFK a few years back, picked up from New Beer Distributors. Pours clear copper with a fine, white head. Herbal and piney hops dominate, with lightly sweet, toasty and bready malts, faint tangy citrus fruits. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with bitter earth and leaves, some crackers, toasted malts. Not pleasurable. Perhaps not in optimal condition.

Can. Amber body with a frothy off-white head. Lots of hops in the aroma: Grapefruit, orange, resin. Notes of toasted grain and dough. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Lingering bitterness. There’s some nice sweet citrus tastes in the flavor, but they’re overwhelmed by the bitterness.

16 ounce can into imperial pint glass, best before 12/30/2012. Pours hazy orange copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, caramel, orange zest, pine, floral, toast, bread, citrus rind, herbal, and earthy spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and hop complexity. Taste of grapefruit, caramel, toast, biscuit, orange rind, pine, pepper, clove, floral, light nuttiness, herbal, and earthy spiciness. Good amount of spicy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, caramel, orange rind, bread, toast, pepper, floral, and earthy spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance of flavors with a good sweetness/bitterness balance; minimal cloying flavors noticed after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice holiday spiced wet hop IPA. Nice hop complexity with good malt and spiciness balance; very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Can at World Of Beer. Pours a clear orange color with a medium frothy white head that burns away steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of citrus and grassy hops. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character and notes of citrus and spice. The finish is hoppy with a short bitter aftertaste. Decent overall.

Can. Grapefruit and herbal hops and vegetal malt aroma. Amber with a small ivory head, moderate lacing. Vegetal malt, grapeftuit peel, and metallic herbal hops flavor. Medium body and carbonation. I found the hops a little on the harsh side, but to be fair, I just had a Surly Wet yesterday.

Location: Draft at The Growler, 10/26/12

Aroma: It has a clean malt nose, with some toast/cookie, spice, and fresh hops
Appearance: This one pours a caramel-orange color with a white head and sticky lace
Flavor: The taste is balanced between sweetness of the malts, the spice, and the hop bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a soft carbonation, and a fairly dry finish on the mouth
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty nice beer. I enjoyed it. They did a nice here, the malty components and the wet hops worked well together.

16 oz. can. From a four pack. Nice looking orange pour with ample carbonation, producing large frothy head. Nose is fresh hops with spicy caramel malt. Smells really nice. Citrus wet hops are the main player with a weak pumpkin/ all spice. And in all honesty; the spice is a wisp. This is the most hoppy seasonal with pumpkin in mind that I’ve ever had. Don’t drink this thinking you’re going to get a lot of pumpkin, because the hop is forward and dominate.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of some generous trader. Another unfortunate brew that got lost in the back of my parent’s refrigerator. Oh yeah, here goes. Cloudy, reddish orange appearance with a big, bubbly, tan head. Quite spicy, ginger, somewhat piney, toasty malty aroma. Caramel, pumpkin, ginger, richly piney hoppy, toasty malty flavor. Not bad.
