Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced out the hop bitterness leaving us this very unique beer. Tropic King bursts with fruity tropical characteristics from the use of New Zealand hop varietals. This beer is a flavor extravaganza that has developed a loyal following. Notes of passion fruit, mango, pepper, and ginger.

Pairs well with hula hooping.

330 ml bottle. Pours a dull cloudy amber with moderate head. Aromas of brett, fuzzy peach and candied citrus. Flavors of dried tropical fruit, earthy Belgian yeast and esters, and cottony peach skin with a dose of wet malts. OK

This one feels very Belgian to me. Pours slightly hazy golden. Initially a huge frothy head but that comes down to a still decent layer of foam. Aroma is full of spicy yeast, together with candy sugar sweetness. Candy sugar is coming out also in the taste. Body is quite heavy and thick, taste caramelly, sugary and yeasty. If you come over of this initial heavy feel it has, some fruits come out as well, peach and mango maybe but a bit too much powerful yeast spices and sugary heaviness are not letting me to enjoy that fully. Still not bad but I was hoping for a more funky beer (Funkwerks - funky??? Too much to ask?).

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Bright golden color, hazy. The aroma is a bit too much vegetable, but also lightly fruity. Good body, sweet, spicy, a bit woody. Good, but a bit too American, which is a flaw.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a clearish gold with 2 fingers of foam that dissipate fairly quickly. Big bubblegum, candy sugar, pina colada nose with some light apple as it warms. No funk to be found. More of a weizen bock / generic saison hybrid. Feels heavy, overly boozy and waaaayyyyy to sweet for a saison. Typical saison swill from the states and I’m American.

Slight haze. Light gold. Light pia, mellow apple, quite sweet, and the esters come across as a bit much.

On tap at St. Augustines on Rare Beer Tap Takeover. Golden, white head. Aroms is floral hops + Munich malt (similar to German Wits). Same taste and aftertaste. Like a hybrid of Saison and Weissebeer :-) Good.

On tap at Farmhouse Festival Vancouver, pours a cloudy bright golden with a medium white head. Aroma is full of tropical stone fruits upfront, followed by Belgian yeast, light funk and citrus zest. Flavour is very fruity, with stone fruits, a little vanilla, and Belgian yeast. Strange vanilla notes make this a bit unharmonious. Quite decent still.
