La birra trappista viene prodotta dai monaci dell’Abbazia delle Tre Fontane a Roma. È una birra ad alta fermentazione prodotta con una ricetta esclusiva che si avvale della sapienza secolare dei monaci, ma rinvenuta fortunosamente in tempi recenti. È una birra color oro intenso dal sapore incisivo e fruttato con l’eucaliptus – piantato dai monaci per bonificare la zona circostante l’abbazia – che stringe le note fruttate portandole a sé.Per affinare la qualità della birra sono trascorsi alcuni anni, ma nel 2015 le è stato finalmente attribuito il marchio ATP (Authentic Trappist Product), l’undicesimo assegnato nel mondo.

Bottle from De Hopduvel, Ghent. Hazydark golden with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, orange, eucalyptus and spicy. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish with a little alcohol. 220617

Pours clear orange with a frothy, slightly off-white head that leaves little lacing. Smells fruity and flowery. The aroma contains a lot of eucalyptus, green fruits, herbs (especially mint), yeast and sugar. It tastes medium fruity sweet at first, then light yeasty bitter. The finish is long, light dry and herbal, in which the eucalyptus lingers. Decent, medium body and fizzy carbonation. Very pronounced in its herbal aroma, perhaps a bit too much, but it makes for an original Trappist.

Bottle (from finest belgian beers). Pours dark golden with whiteish head. The head stays for a long time. Aroma is fruity, citrus, sweetness, apples, malt. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fresh fruits, citrus, apples, malt, yeast. Finish is fruity bitter with some booze kick. Overall: westmalle tirpel it is not, but it is a decent tripel.
