A Mikkeller interpretation of the classic Trappist ale, Orval. Brett funk in a light fruity pale, that will taste great fresh, but age beautifully for years!

Aroma of fruits, malt, yeast, Brett funk, peppery notes, fresh hops. Flavour is light sweet with a wonderful moderate to medium bitter finish. I love Orval and this is certainly a nice approximation.

The orginal Årh Hvad. 330ml shared with Ryan and Kulminator's regulars (Ernest, Pedro, Fox). Appearance: hazy copper with a tan head. Aroma: cardboard and funk. Taste: very bitter, harsh, too much Brett. Overall: passed its prime.

Poured from 330mL bottle (as Årh Hvad). Clear amber gold with white head. Aroma has tons of horse blanket, touch of cardboard. Same flavour with feint astringency and hopping.

Bottle bought at Arla Unika/Mikkeller tasting some years ago (was keept dark and cool. BBE 29/08/26). Pours copper orange with large white head. Aroma is intense sour apples, skin of red grapes, malt, yeast and hints of banana and cloves. Taste is light to medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Body is oily with fizzy carbonation. Finish is long and balanced sweet and bitter with intense notes of apple, apple seeds, almonds, oak, leather, yeast, banana and cloves.

Bottled (had as Mikkeller Årh Hvad?!). Hazy deep orange colour with a mediumsized white foamy head. Aroma is funk, farmyard, fruits and some slight spicy and herbal tones. Flavour is grassy, citrusy, some farmyard and mild earthy tones. Somewhat dry palate. A bit yeasty in the finish to. Good take on Orval, but feels like a light version of it.

Pours hazy orange with a small head. It smells funky and citrusy. The flavor is tart and citrusy. There are mild hops and I think caramel. Lively carbonation. Quite good but was hoping for great here.

Bottle. Bought, I believe, är a Systembolaget. Many years ago. This bottle has been in my keeping since 2016 I believe. One of the bottles I keep in englsnd for aging. I didn't intend to age it deliberately but its BBD was not for years so I left it. And boy am I glad I did!! Aroma is fantastic Belgian funk. It mellowed over time but still that brett is very much there. Lovely deep golden colour. Having read that this was a try on Orval I'm almost scared how well they have managed to recreate that special and funky taste of Orval. Incredibly clever. Easy going with a funky spice at the end. Superb beer and I'm sure it doesn't taste near the same young.
