A Mikkeller interpretation of the classic Trappist ale, Orval. Brett funk in a light fruity pale, that will taste great fresh, but age beautifully for years!

Hazy, deep amber colored, medium off white creamy head, nice lacing. Aroma is of tart fruit, bit sugary, funky barnyard, bit citrus. Taste is medium sweet caramel, bit candy sugar, tartish fruit, tropical and citrus, light+ funky notes, light sourness, moderate peppery-spicy bit citrusy bitterness but quite astringent in the finish and aftertaste, dryish. Medium- bodied, average carbonation, oily.

Bottle from Secret Santa, thanks for the opportunity! Deep auburn color with a huge frothy off white head. Initially some intense pineapple and tropical fruits on the nose that segue into spicy earth light honey and caramel The flavor is sweet bready caramel with almost a saison fruitiness before a wallop of earthy peppery bite and some moderate hop bitterness. Interesting brew for sure.

16oz can via Secret Santa Winter 2015 pours a murky amber with some frothy, off white head. Nose is not great at first, extremely pithy, some celery, some tomato, some blood orange, straw. Flavor is a little better, starts with blood orange and tomato, straw, crash, some dried orange peel. Finishes with some brown paper bag. Dunno if this was a bad/old can or if it’s just generally poorly done, but this was not great.

0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’ as ’Mikkeller Årh Hvad?!’, best before March 2025. Clear, orangeish amber with a huge, foamy, stable, tan head. Sweetish-sourish, slightly funky, fruity aroma of lemon, gooseberry, oak and hints of caramel. Bitter, slightly sourish, minimally funky taste of grapefruit, oak and old leather, followed by a medium long, bitter, slightly tart finish. Medium body, effervescent and slightly astringent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Far away from the original, not really enjoyable. Huge disappointment!
