St. Benedict of Nursia lived in the late 5th to early 6th centuries. Legend has it while living in solitude, he was befriended by a raven that later saved his life. He is most remembered for writing the Rule of St. Benedict that, among other virtues, teaches humility. Inspired by this Rule we humbly offer St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, a hand-crafted ale using generous amounts of dark roasted malts and the finest noble hops for a robust warming flavor.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 10/9/11

Aroma: The nose is fairly malty, with notes of caramel, toffee, dark fruits, and a little bit of yeast/grains
Appearance: This one pours a sightly hazy amber color with a beige head and light drips of lace
Flavor: The taste is plus sweet, similar to the components of the nose, with a mild English hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a malty, sweet stickiness on the mouth, and an average-lively carbonation
Overall Impression: Overall, this is a solid Winter Ale. It is a little too sticky-sweet for my particular palate, but I can see the appeal for those who prefer that style. It works reasonably well for what it is trying to be, but I can't go much higher then this.

12 oz. loose bottle. $1.50 @ Woodman’s. A cheery red/brown color, even in a narrow glass. Smells slightly of sweet cherry juice. Taste brings a bit more of that sweet cherry taste. Lightly toasted malts, but in profusion enough to cling to my lip. More ale fruitiness, perhaps a touch of Belgian yeast involved here. I do get a slight edge of autolyzed yeast from the thin layer of sludge at the bottom. Still it’s a very jolly beer that sets aside issues of malt vs. hops and asks us to just enjoy it.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a medium orange color with a large foamy tan head that left some lacing. The aroma was toasted caramel, rum, cherry and nut. The flavor was sour, tangy and a bit vegetal with notes of cherry, pear, caramel, nut and hints of vague spices. The finsih was medium length tangy, fruity and spicy. Medium body. Ok.

Bottle. Deep copper with a small beige head. Aroma of malt, banana, yeast. Flavor is caramel malt with a distinct burnt sugar taste, spice, barnyard/wet straw, and very slight hops. The flavors seem to be fighting each other, and don’t come together very well. A bit messy.

Translucent deep orange-brown body, thin buff head. Nose of caramel, brown sugar, plum, toffee, and fig, sweet and thin. Body is plummy and somewhat chewy, with the same dark fruit and caramel characters noted in the aroma. Residual sugars and spice linger in the finish. This beer is probably best in small doses, as the dominance of the dark fruit and spice notes becomes cloying after a few sips.

12oz bottle. Filtered amber-brown color. No real head...minimal trace at best. Mild chocolate and amber malt aroma, sort of like a mild Doppelbock. The taste is the same, with a smooth milk chocolate layer of smoothness among the solid background of sweet maltiness. Some amber malt and mild hop spiciness, but overall very smooth and rich. A pretty nice beer from Point, not world-class, but a worthwhile beer to mix it up with.

Pour is a cola looking brown with a small tan head. Aroma has some spice and brown sugar with a touch of dark fruit. Flavor is pretty much the same some dark fruit, candi sugar and molasses. A nice earthyness is left on the tounge after the swallow. This is by far one of the better if not the best beers this brewer makes.

I don’t understand how this is a dubbel. No noticeable Belgian yeast. Brown in color and light malt aroma. Flavor has malt and sugar. No fruit or other complexity, like is found in a dubbel.
