This is one half of a Black & Tan. Not just any Black & Tan, but one where a toasted smug and hoppy fella get together to make a sublime Taiji balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this profoundly evil Imperial Stout solo).

Bottle from BottleDog, London, and shared at Dan’s. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma of liquorice, chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, and molasses. Medium to heavy sweetness, light roasted bitterness. Full bodied, slick texture, average carbonation.

Kinda bummed to find out Yin and Yang don’t balance out, since Yin’s a much better stout than Yang is a DIPA. Not that bummed, though, because drinking Yin’s a pretty damn nice thing to do. Massive amounts of roasted malt and chocolate sit atop a bitter, dark roast finish. Sweet cocoa, raisin and anise are rounded out by a firm but manageable bitter finish, and the fade is pure sweet Imperial Stout goodness. Not quite the looker as its brother, but the nose is spot-on, and the alcohol’s an afterthought. Tasty. Tastier when mixed. Not sure why, but I’m just gonna accept the mystery on this one.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, alcohol, cereal and a good dose of lactose. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with a lot of oatmeal and grain noticeable, coupled with some light chocolate, a touch of coffee, earth and a nutty flavour that has some alcohol warmth, but pretty well hidden at 10% abv. Aftertaste shows some chocolate and deep malty flavours and a bit of nuts, but a mellow and uninspired complexity for sure. Overall, a good beer, but not great, nor a must-have, but as an Imperial Stout, if you love the style, then worth trying, otherwise, probably a waste of liver capacity or money, as there are better options. I preferred this one compared to the Yang, in their respective styles. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from the Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, Virginia (20th Street Location) on 12-December-2014 for US$3,89 sampled at home in Washington on 05-February-2017, alongside the Evil Twin Yang in a horizontal tasting.

Bottle, 330 ml, shared with JFK10000. Pours black with dense light brown head. Coffee, roasted, cocoa, licorice, sweet with bitter finish. Oily. Unfortunately alcohol is too aggressive, too boozy for me. Medium bodied, some more body would be better.

Boom! Boozy dark fruits/choc, hints of coffee, and so smooth.

On tap at Who Cares for Beer 2016 Beer Festival, Bevog Brewery, Bad Radkersburg, Austria. Shared with His Highness Kaiser und König Igor and Rasta Teacher Mark. Black with tan head. Blueberry jam, grapes, licorice, light soy sauce. Strong, sweet, alcohol present, turns to light dry finish. Thick body, oily texture. Serious beer, but not that innovative.
