Belgian witbier, one of the relatively few beers Martens cultivates for themselves, in contrast with the vast lake of bland pale lagers they make for supermarkets in Belgium and abroad. This bottle ironically comes from a Jumbo supermarket in the Netherlands. Medium thick, egg-white, lightly lacing head, dense moussy rim, flat islands of foam in the middle; hazy straw blonde colour with green tinge and a column of vivid sparkling in the middle. Classic witbier aroma of lemon zest, chewing gum, margarine, coriander seed, popcorn, soap, ripe banana, pear, feta, yellow plum, white bread, freshly cut grass, raw white cabbage, cooked turnip. Crisp, fruity onset, moderately sweet with bubblegummy banana ester next to some pear and vague pineapple notes, soft sourish edges, fizzy carbonation, supple and slick, soapy mouthfeel; this soapiness is established by a very wheaty basis matched with some bready barley notes, adorned with even more soapiness in the end due to the coriander seed, but refreshened by dried citrus peel crispness; a dash of earthy hop bitterness sits all the way at the back and provides body to the finish, while the soapiness lingers with a softly spicy-sweetish coriander flavour. This is about as classic as it gets for the style, strange that these Hoegaarden clones are still made today in spite of the decreasing popularity of the style. Correct and refreshing, as it should be, but adds nothing to the already quite standardized Belgian witbier pool.

0.33 bottle from a local shop in Ilica, Zagreb. Murky golden, moderate lasting, small to medium off-white head. Skunky and yeasty, slightly fruity with malted wheat underneath. Fake sweet taste and malty flavors. Harsh. Light to medium body, high carbonation, light finish. Lots of flaws, bad. 43529=2.4

Bottle, 0.33l. Hazy yellow pour with two finger soapy white head. Average retention, pretty good lacing. Sugary soda nose, notes of lemon and coriander. Thin body, medium carbonation. Regular texture, a bit watery. Starts of sugary sweet, develops into fruity tartness. Aroma of sugar, lemon juice and coriander. Slightly grainy and herbal. Some acidity towards the finish. Sugary sweet mouthfeel. Overall, it works as a quick refreshment. Good thirst quencher but otherwise quite simple and straightforward.

Taste sweet, wheaty, yeasty, light lemon, orange peel. Sweet and light acid aftertaste and some coriander bitterness, light cloves. Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a hazy straw colour with a thin white head. The aroma is yeast, banana, zesty citrus but with a little grassy hop. The flavour is sweet with a light, sweet malt, sugary, dry yeast palate. Medium to light bodied with lively carbonation.
