A Traditional German Style Imperial Stout.
We’re stoked to introduce you to the latest in the Gegen den Strom series with Freigeist Brewery.

This traditional German style Imperial Stout has coffee and wood notes with just a bite of smoke.
It was aged in second-use American oak bourbon barrels and the malt was house-smoked in Alder wood. Drink with caution though or Dark just might reveal his ghost self in your old haunts.
(On Can). It was 1918 when Dark made his noble mark. His pride took him outside the city walls of Cologne to scout the dense forest. High in a tree he found the white flower pinned it upon his chest and proved himself a true soldier, but on his return, he came upon a bind of flowers so beautiful he died. Dark has returned, a ghost of his former self, to harvest the finest floral hops in all of Germany to adorn his barrels filled with traditional German stout just as imperial as himself.

Taster at Liquor Express. Pours black, with a small, tan head. The aroma is strong roast, burnt oak, walnuts, and black coffee. Dry and very bitter. Heavy body, with a sticky, astringent mouthfeel. This is a very strong, very roasted stout. Interesting, but not my thing.

Can. Espresso, chocolate malt, oak, and dry hay aroma. Black with large brown head. Moderately sweet espresso, dark chocolate malt, and moderately bitter dry wood/hay flavor. Nice body and great balance. Excellent - a solid straight forward Impy Stout.

Can, 473ml. Black, an inch of loosish beige head that fades but never disappears. Aroma of mildly smoky roast, chicory, vanilla. Barely medium bodied, carbonation is on the highish side of moderate for a stout of this strength. More definite in taste than suggested by the aroma with a firmly bready and roasted malt presence up front. A roasted presence. But not all that much sweetness or richness, with things soon giving way to "Continental" floral and spicy bitterness. Pretty nice but 8.8% sure seems a bit spendy.
