It’s not red. Or is it? What at first seems like another easy classification as a black IPA gets mighty confused when you hold it up to the light because, yes, there’s definitely redness there. And as there would be because the recipe is based very loosely on the West Coast USA style Red Ale, tweaked and nudged until it’s arguably become Six String’s signature beer. The red colour here comes from rich caramel and chocolate malts, which also give off a contrasting creamy white head. Once you’ve stopped looking at it and get it close to your face, you’ll get the hops, hops, hops. They’ve been added late in the brewing process; at the end of the boil, in the whirlpool and dry hopping during fermentation. Yet, despite the heavy hopping regime, between those big malts and the big hops it’s a balanced beer. You could argue it keeps its balance a little too well. At 6.6 per cent ABV, you might even say it sneaks up on you.

(Can) Pours cloudy deep amber brown with good dense off-white head. Nice aroma - pine with grapefruit hints. Medium body, plenty of good carbonation giving a nice smooth mouthfeel. Great tasting too - a nice balance of plenty of hops and a rich toffee malt. Good bitter finish. Nice beer.

On tap at Six String, pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out resinous hops and caramel malt in good balance. Flavour is nicely balanced with lots of hop resins and bready caramel malt in good balance. Really nicely constructed, with a good balance of sweet and hops.

Aromas of toffee, cherry, lemon. The taste is grapefruit, bread and sawdust with a hint of rye, cherry and honey. A really nice RIPA.

Can. Dark reddish brown with a pale beige head that fades to a coat and laces well. Aroma of shiny brioche bun with candied plums, peach, grass, pine, hints of grapefruit. Nice but not a particularly hoppy aroma. They find their way through on the palate more effectively. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Quite sweet but with bitterness cutting though straight away. Sweet bread, almost ripe nectarine, then grapefruit, a little pine, some herbal notes. Bitterness at the end is not that high, which is a surprise given how it chops through at the start. Tasty, original.

375ml can into schooner glass. ABV is 6%. Well, this is it. The Six String beer everybody has told me to try. No pressure then.....Excellent nose, all grapefruit and cloves, maybe even a touch of cinnamon. It’s a murky red/brown beer with a two finger white creamy head that lasts. Medium body, hop bitterness everywhere. Finish is pine needles, aspirin and distant lemons. It’s good serious beer.

From a 375ml can on 24/4/2015. Pours a deep dark reddy brown with a medium head which dissipates quickly. The aroma is very sweet, fragrant and fruity, with some candy and chocolate malt in the mix. Very flavoursome too, again a fair bit of dark malt and sweet fruit, set off against some big hops , which are quite sticky and resiny. Has a fullish body and average carbonation. Strikes me as a bit of a cross between a black IPA and an American strong ale. Really hoppy and very enjoyable. A pleasant surprise. Great to see more Aussie craft brewers producing gear with real character.

Pours brown with a large off-white head.Nose shows caramel, soft bready malt, toffee, fruit confectionery, pear, nectarines.Very similar flavours, a heavy focus on the malt with a lot of sweetness but it’s countered by piny and resinous hops leading to an assertive bitterness.

Dull reddish-brown. Sweet, a bit buttery, lots of rich citrus, lots of crystal, the butter is getting a bit much but decent brew.

Draught as "Six String IPA" at Pumphouse, Sydney, on August 10, 2013.Hazy dark brown color, fluffy tan head. At first fruity hoppy taste, goes caramel and finishes with a bitter aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, high bitterness. Swet, caramel, hoppy, fruity scent.
