From a 330ml bottle on 16/8/2012. Pours a cloudy dark amber with a smallish head. Has a strong malty aroma of toffee, butterscotch and caramel. Very sweet and malty in the mouth, with more butterscotch and toffee, honey, some scotch and a touch of dark fruit. Finishes with a nice, reasonably firm, balancing bitterness. The texture is quite creamy and the 11% abv is quite well hidden. All up, this is a very enjoyable barley wine. Re-rate on 21/2/2018. Well it's six years between drinks, but I'm even more impressed. A glorious nose and a delicious toffee/butterscotch character. Just lovely.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours a dark amber with a slight haze and a small off-white head. Intense aroma of caramel, overripe fruit and alcohol. Solid body, fairly low carbonation. Caramel, overripe fruit and some hops. Very solid and close to style. 150311

Bottle. Nice dark amber with a coat of pale beige head. Aroma of toasted malt, toffee, dried fruit, liqueur port. Taste has treacle, dried fruit, grassy bitterness. Quite Porty. Alcohol pretty evident, but not raw. Smooth verging upon sticky. Low carbonation just lightens things up a little. Rather British. Quite complex, but not very deep. Good balance.

Deep garnet pour with good clarity, large off-white creamy head leaves thick lacing. Nice!Aroma shows loads of caramel and golden syrup with some fruitiness (dates, figs, sultanas). Molasses also evident, along with toffee. Lovely.Flavours follow along the same line: intensely malty with lots of caramel and some prunes. Easy going bitterness, the alcohol makes for a smooth lingering finish.Very creamy body, almost velvety. Moderately low carbonation, very chewy though.

The name reminds me more of shoepolish than of beer - but I took a chance and sampled it anyways. The beer is dark amber with next to no head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of alcohol and prunes. The flavor is sweet with notes of over ripe fruit and a slight acidity.

Bright burgundy-brown. Earthy, blackberryish malt aroma. The palate is malty - not as rich as the 11% abv would suggest, though. In keeping with the Aussie tradition, it’s pretty restrained. The palate is malty with hints of nuts and dark fruit, but not much alcohol. Drinkable, but aside from the light character it’s not especially distinctive.

Bottle, many thanks to mullet for bringing this over from Down Under to Belgium.
Hazy, ruby brown colour. Creamy, light brown head, which diminishes totally. A spare lace. Nose of (alcoholic) malts (caramel), banana and liquor. Flavour like a fully bodied stout. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. Moderately bitter finish, which lasts long. The finish is quite alcoholic too. This was my first barley wine ever, but I did like it. Pitty they’re so hard to find here in Belgium.

Cloudy chestnut color, VERY sour nose with some dried fruit and burnt raisins. The body is incredibly smooth with low carbonation and surpisingly light for the size of the beer. I picked up dust, prunes, burnt raisins, chocolate and brown sugar in the mouth. Smooth brown sugar finish.
