330ml Bottle - Dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Pine, raisins, marzipan, fudge, dates and walnuts in the aroma. Sticky toffee pudding, dates, raisins, pine, grapefruit, and liquorice fudge can all be detected in the rich, yet easy to drink taste. Really nice.

Keg at the Euston Tap, London. Pours deep black with a strong, tight beige cream head that seems to last forever. Smells good, some dark fruits, juicy pine, chocolate. Medium to big sweet flavor, definitely some straight booze notes, with burnt wood, earth and pine, ripe citrus, toasted brown sugar, some dark toffee. Full bodied with fine but filling carbonation. Warm to hot finish with charred wood and earth, moderate roast, some resinous and burnt pine, dried blackberries, dark sugars. Jesus, this is a ballsy beer that covers a lot of ground - stylistically speaking. It could be a dark barley wine, or a big black IPA, or a sweet and hoppy imperial stout...It’s good stuff no matter how you classify it, but it is a ball-buster. I like it.

It pours very dark brown (near black) with a thick light tan head. The nose is is roasted malt, toast, earth, dark fruit, berry and caramel. The taste is roasted malt, dark fruit, resinous, blueberry, jam, caramel, toast, burnt earth and some alcohol earth with a bitter finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Nice depth of flavour. Solid stuff.

Bottle from Grape & Grind, Bristol. dark brown with hints of red and a slight, short lived tan head. Moderate carbonation and plenty of lacing down the glass. Sweet aroma of candy sugar, black currants, liquorice and malt loaf. Full mouth feel, with fruit cake notes, some caramel, orange peel and spice. Finish was dryish, with a touch of hop. Alcohol was surprisingly well hidden. Excellent.

(Cask at Gallows Bird Real Ale Festival ’13) The beer poured almost black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had roasted malts, chocolate, sweetness and white bread. Palate was full bodied and warming with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, sweetness, liquorice, hops and bitterness. Not a bad brew but the high abv was too disturbing.

Cask @ Gallows Bird Real Ale Festival 2013

Pours pitch black with a tiny head. Aroma of dark ripe fruits, hints of roasty malts and sweet caramel. Taste is sweet and malty with notes of blueberries, dark ripe fruits, plum, licorice, sweet caramel and syrup. Finish is sweet and warming with notes of alcohol, licorice, dark ripe fruits, syrup and caramel. Quite dark, heavy and malty, not your typical barley wine. Still quite tasty.
