A full malt barley wine of 13% by volume, which is brewed once a year; fermented with beer and wine yeast.
With L’ensemble we find the limit. Not only the boundary of the maximum possible, because 13% is extremely heavy for a full malt beer. But also the boundary between beer and wine, because to get this amount of alcohol, a part of the fermentation uses wine yeast. Brewing and fermenting this unique beer requires much time and attention. Partly because we make this beer only once a year and comes on the market when it becomes winter season. A perfect companion to the Christmas season! Deliciously warming.

Bottle at a tasting. Rich caramelly dried fruits malty complexity throughout the experience, spiced up by moderate alcohol which however does not seem harsh. Also medium-low phenolic spiciness. Quite good.

Bottle 2015 shared at home. Murky brown with lots of yeast clumps and small beige head. Milk chocolate, dark red wine, sherry, lots of sweet malts, chestnut, walnuts. Over medium sweet and bitter, very light sour, with a long lasting bitter finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Bit disappointing actually, though certainly not bad.

Dark ruby pour, thick as hell, with no head and a very thin lacing that is slow to rise to the surface. Smells like maple syrup, caramel, prunes, figs, cherry jam, strawberry jam and faint coffee. Bitter-sweet taste, kinda simple for a barleywine, with caramel and dried fruit dominating the taste, on top of a bitter, slightly metallic feel. Full bodied and with a smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle: Poured a cooper color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramel and biscuit malt with light dry notes. Taste is a nice mix of caramel malt with nice dry biscuit malt with light residual sugar and toffee. Body is about average with good carbonation. Love the balance of this beer with good level of complexity. Nice Belgian take on the style.

Bottle, 2014 vintage (from Koht). Pours dark ruby with beige head. The head stays. Aroma is intense raisins, sweetness, malt, candi. Flavor is sweet and sour, some saltiness, raisins, malt, slight metallic notes, sour berries, and toffee. Finish is malty-woody-dry bitter with warming alcohol. Overall: great brew, sweet-malty booze bomb, just as I like it.

50cl bottle from Maakun, many thanks! Vintage 2014. Pours a nice looking mahogany color with a thick, dense white head. Aroma: Dried dark fruits, soaked plums, sherry notes, old wood, molasses. Quite complex. Not that sticky. Flavor: very malty with plums, wood, dark fruits, sweetness. Not boozy at all despite the high ABV. Surprisingly drinkable, not too sweet either. Nice sipper!
